Masterchefs in the class

Week 3 and 4 is all about grammatically correct transactions in Auslan, as we learn Shop signs. Students are learning the signs for bank, chemist, buy, sell, money, toy shop, cafe, butcher, ice cream shop, fruit shop and supermarket.

With a plethora of props made by Simone and the incredible teaching assistants team Meena, Connor, Tilly, Toli, Meaghan and Leo, a huge thank you to everyone who chipped in to make this fortnight so special. With over a hundred different burger recipe props, shop signs, paper chef hats and vocabulary support sheets, students are getting hospitality experience under their belt as they wear noise cancelling headphones and sign to one another, asking for particular burger recipes.

Many students have successfully grasped a brand new concept we’re focusing on this year, which is Auslan grammar. Auslan, like other fully developed languages, has it’s own grammar structure. Students are being quizzed each week on how to re-arrange fun sentences on the board to see if they can sort it into TIME + TOPIC + COMMENT. The year 3 & 4 students are just tackling TOPIC + COMMENT and will be eased into the more complex grammar in year 5.

How can I help?
