Year 5 News

From Tessa Patrao, Year 5D teacher
Reading
This week in reading we have been focusing on sentence level grammar. We have brainstormed interesting and precise verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs and we have broken down sentences into their noun and verb groups to understand how they work. Some classes have even started books clubs and it has been really great to discuss books with each other.
Writing
This week in writing we have been focussing on sentence structure and how to create interesting dialogue in our fiction pieces. We have expanded from sentence stems to create sentences that branch with extra detail from the left, middle and right depending on the purpose of the writing. We also completed a cold write based on a prompt and it was great to spend the time writing a longer piece.
Maths
In maths this week we have been learning multiplication and division strategies. We learned about the area model and the grid model for multiplication and what happens when you multiple and divide by powers of 10. We practised flipping our division problems into multiplication problems to make them easier to solve and explored the ways multiplication and division are the inverse of each other.
Sports
At the end of week 2 we had Grade 5 and 6 house sports day and it was really fun! We got to compete with each other in hurdles, sprints, long jump, shot put and discus. We all tried our hardest to run, jump and throw as hard and fast as we could and did our best to show house spirit and good sportsmanship to each other, celebrating everyone’s success. We would like to say a big thank you to the P.E teachers for organising. On Friday of week 3 Some grade 5s competed in district cross country. It was a great day out and we are proud of all the grade 5s who ran and made great times.
