Winter Is Coming
Molesworth Campus
Fast Hands have been the order of the day down at the Molesworth Campus. We’ve been focussing all our energy and attention on EYES and HANDS whilst catching a sea of various objects. Big balls, little balls, soft balls, hard balls, frisbees, Vortex missiles, bean bags, silky magician’s hankies, even some rubber chickens. Bagark!
We have discovered that when we use our EYES to follow the ball we also need to MOVE our HANDS to meet the object as it moves through the air. Catching is an active skill, involving focus, hand-eye coordination and lots of repetition.
As the PE kids have seen over the past two weeks, we can practice catching with a range of items, we don’t have to use speciality sport specific equipment. So get the family together for a hunt around the house and see what things you can safely use for catching practice, big they big, small, hard soft, round, rubber or chicken shaped.
Fast Hands: Here’s How to Play
This game needs 2 players and something that can be dropped and caught - Even a scrunched up ball of paper will work!
One player reaches up and / or stands up high, holding the item whilst counting down, 3…2…1, then they DROP the item down to the catcher who is waiting to catch below.
To add a challenge see if the catcher can start with their hands on their hips like a cowboy / cowgirl or even touching them together behind their back!
Don’t forget to use EYES to track and HANDS to catch. |
Errol St
This past fortnight we have officially pulled back the cover on the long jump pit and pointed our toes at jumping season. Socks and shoes full of sand and plenty of whinging aside it has been a lofty effort jumping and landing in our old pit. Some monster jumps have gone down, easily showing up the weary efforts of the PE Department.
Sequencing the feet during triple jump has been a new skill for our Year 3’s to tackle, but we’ve applied our trusty slogan to warm ups to help kids on their way. You will never hear the confusing use of “Hop, Skip, Jump.” on the Errol St oval. Heresy around these parts. “BAD, BAD, GOOD.” is the only catchphrase allowed. It’s a simple way to look at landing first with your non-dominant leg, then same again on your second step, before switching to the dominant leg for a single leg takeoff.
So excuse the sand you find in your washing machine and ask your senior campus kids to show you their BAD, BAD, GOOD triple jump sequence the next time you have some good jumping space around you!
We also want to congratulate our District Cross Country team who competed very hard last Friday with NMPS taking 2nd place overall.
