Year 6 - Explores 'Towards Zero Waste' at CERES

On Thursday the 13th, our Year 6 students headed out for an exciting, hands-on learning experience at the School of Nature and Climate at CERES.

This excursion directly connected to our PBL driving question: "How might we use our knowledge and understanding of the world to make informed choices to reduce our global environmental impact?"

Throughout the day, students engaged deeply with real-world environmental challenges and solutions. They explored the differences between linear and circular waste models, discovering creative ways non-recyclable materials can be repurposed to keep waste out of landfills. The cohort put their knowledge into practice by investigating soil types best suited for composting, crafting their very own functional wallets from everyday non-recyclable materials, and putting their problem-solving skills to the test by pitching unique eco-friendly product ideas for an imaginary $1,000,000 investment.

Our Year 6 students returned to Lakeside College with custom-made upcycled wallets, a deeper understanding of how lower waste benefits both people and the planet, and a newfound sense of empowerment to be active agents of change in our community.
