Dear Parents and Guardians

Welcome back to all our Cebula boarders and families following the recent long weekend. We hope everyone had the opportunity to enjoy a well-earned break and return to boarding refreshed and ready for the final weeks of term.

It is certainly a busy time in the Cebula community, with only a few weeks remaining before the end of the term. Many of our boys are involved in finals teams and are representing the College with great commitment, while the Year 12 boys are entering the final weeks of their schooling journey. This is an exciting but also significant time for our senior boys, and we look forward to supporting them as they approach this important milestone.

With the College leadership voting on the horizon, I congratulate Year 11s Ben, James and Caleb for nominating for the Head Boarder position for 2027 and look forward to seeing them attend the forthcoming leadership camp.

As we move further into the term, tiredness, the demands of residential living, school and sport, as well the anticipation of the end of term can sometimes influence the way boys interact with one another. One area we continue to reinforce is the importance of how our boys speak to and treat one another. Our Cebula values provide a wonderful framework for how our boys can approach their everyday interactions:

Charity – Being generous towards others, showing kindness and looking for opportunities to help rather than hinder. Sometimes charity is as simple as including someone in a conversation, helping a younger boy or recognising when someone is having a difficult day.

Excellence – Striving to do our best, not only in the classroom, on the sporting field or in our activities, but also in the way we conduct ourselves. Excellence means holding ourselves to a high standard even when nobody is watching.

Brotherhood – Looking after the people around us. Brotherhood means including others, standing up for those who may need support and understanding that we are part of a community rather than simply a group of individuals living in the same house.

Understanding – Taking the time to consider how our words and actions might affect someone else. Not everyone responds to humour, teasing or comments in the same way and understanding requires us to recognise and respect those differences.

Leadership – Leadership is not simply about having a position or title. Every boy can demonstrate leadership by making good choices, setting a positive example and encouraging others to do the right thing.

Action – Our values only have meaning when we put them into practice. Action might mean stepping in when a friend is being treated poorly, choosing not to join in with inappropriate banter, helping someone who is struggling or simply making the decision to do the right thing.

My challenge for every Cebula boarder as we head towards the end of term is for them to consider what they can do each day to make Cebula a better community. The answer might be something small, but small actions repeated every day are what create a strong boarding community.
