Zero to Hero

On Tuesday, 19 August, Mrs Cox, Mr Alexander, six Year 9 students and five Year 10 students attended zero2hero’s In Your Head youth mental health forum at the Perth Convention Centre alongside more than 1,300 secondary students from across WA. The event provided students with an engaging opportunity to learn about mental health and wellbeing through keynote presentations and a range of interactive breakout sessions.

Students were able to choose sessions that interested them, exploring topics including breathing and mindfulness techniques, practical wellbeing strategies, navigating social media, the mental challenges faced by athletes and the positive impact that physical activity can have on mental wellbeing. The event aims to equip young people with practical tools to look after their own mental health and support their peers.

Perhaps most importantly, our students returned with some powerful messages about looking after themselves and each other. They reflected on the importance of not being too hard on themselves, recognising the things they are doing well, and understanding that setbacks are temporary. They also highlighted the value of surrounding themselves with honest, supportive friends, showing compassion towards others, and having the courage to talk when things aren't going well. As one presenter put it, “Having the courage to open up about your feelings gives permission to others to do the same”.

The conference occurs every year and is available to Year 9 & 10s who show an expression of interest.
