Year 10 – Employability Skills
Due to the public holiday, Year 10 students did not have a MyPath session this fortnight.
Students should now have completed the resume they began developing in our previous sessions.
We look forward to working with the boys again in Week 8, when we will build on this by looking at cover letters and applying for casual and part-time jobs.
Year 11 – Planning for 2027
The Careers Team has continued meeting with Year 11 students as they make important decisions about their programs and pathways for 2027.
This has included interviews with students applying for University Enabling Programs, as well as discussions with students considering VET courses, apprenticeships and traineeships.
These conversations help students develop a Year 12 program that supports their intended pathway beyond school.
Year 12 – University Costs, HELP & Scholarships
Our latest Year 12 MyPath session focused on some of the practical considerations involved in preparing for university.
Students on a university pathway explored:
- University course costs and Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs)
- HECS-HELP and how HELP loans work
- Other costs associated with university study
- University scholarships and where to find them
- What makes a strong scholarship application
Students were encouraged to actively search and apply for scholarships rather than assuming they won't be eligible. Scholarships are available for a wide range of achievements and circumstances, not just academic results.
With university applications now underway, students should also continue reviewing their TISC preferences, Early Offer requirements and course prerequisites and seek assistance from the Careers Team when needed.

Murdoch University Open Night
Tuesday 1 September | 5:30–7:30 pm
Students and families considering Murdoch University are encouraged to attend its upcoming Open Night.
This is another opportunity to explore study options, learn more about courses and have questions answered before students finalise their university preferences.

Free ECU Year 12 ATAR Revision Sessions:
Tuesday 29 September – Friday 2 October
ECU is offering FREE Year 12 ATAR revision sessions during the school holidays, available both on campus and online.
Subjects include:
- Biology
- Human Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- English
- Mathematics Applications
- Mathematics Methods
- Mathematics Specialist
Each four-hour session covers the Year 12 syllabus, examination techniques, revision strategies and Q&A. Students also receive revision notes. These sessions are well worth considering for Year 12 ATAR students preparing for their final examinations.

Career Spotlight – Work Health & Safety and Environmental Health
Looking for a career that combines science, problem-solving, working with people and making workplaces or communities safer?
Work Health & Safety (WHS) and Environmental Health are two career areas students may not have considered.
Work Health & Safety
WHS professionals work to prevent workplace injuries and illness and create safer workplaces.
Their work can include:
- Identifying hazards and assessing risks
- Investigating workplace incidents
- Conducting workplace inspections
- Developing safety procedures
- Training employees
- Advising organisations about health and safety requirements
Career opportunities include WHS Adviser, Safety Officer, Safety Consultant, Workplace Safety Inspector and Safety Manager.
These professionals work across industries including mining, construction, manufacturing, transport, healthcare, education and government. Curtin estimates employment in occupational and environmental health professional roles will grow by more than 19% nationally by 2035. (Curtin University)
Studying WHS in WA
Curtin offers a Bachelor of Science (Health, Safety and Environment). The three-year degree has a guaranteed ATAR of 70, includes 250 hours of professional placement and is professionally accredited. (Curtin University)

Environmental Health
Environmental Health professionals focus on protecting the health of the wider community.
Their work can involve:
- Food safety
- Water quality
- Environmental hazards
- Public health
- Pollution and noise
- Risk assessment
- Investigating health concerns in the community
An Environmental Health Officer, for example, may work for local government inspecting food businesses, investigating complaints and helping manage risks to community health.
One WA pathway is Curtin's postgraduate Environmental Health qualification, which can follow a relevant undergraduate degree such as public health, human biology, environmental science, biology, chemistry or allied health. (Curtin University)

Who might enjoy these careers?
These careers may particularly suit students who enjoy Science, Health, Geography and problem-solving, but don't necessarily see themselves working in a traditional healthcare or laboratory role.
They can offer a mix of office work, site visits, investigation, working with people and practical problem-solving - and lead to careers across government and some of WA's largest industries.
