Puffs

Well our time at 'A Certain School of Magic and Magic' has come to an end. On Thursday 16th and  Friday 17th  May, our VCE Theatre Studies class performed ‘Puffs’ by Matt Cox for two wonderful audiences. The feedback was unanimous; they did an incredible job. The audience was in stiches as our talented students as they shared the adventures of a bunch of young misfits through their seven years of wizard schooling.

This production was not just a performance for the fun of it, it is actually an assessment task. For our Unit 3 students it makes up 60% of their marks for the semester. Students have been totally responsible for the show. While their teacher guides them, they take on all the productions roles – acting, directing, costume, makeup, props, set, sound and lighting. Each student works in two different production role teams. While it’s an incredibly fun experience, it’s also a taste of life beyond school as students essentially become project managers for a term and a half. They have production meetings, share their visions and learn to compromise with their fellow group members, consider budgets, promote their work, set deadlines and consistently collaborate. There’s so much more to this than just getting up on stage.

Many staff have already been thanked for their support for a myriad of different contributions, but special thanks must go to John Jennings and Michael Newell. Mr Jennings has always been a great supporter of Theatre at LHS and contributed to our show in many ways, including a cameo on stage. Unfortunately, he fell quite ill the day before opening night, so Mr Newell stepped up with just one morning’s notice and performed the role that same evening, as well as closing night. He was fantastic and everyone was very appreciative. 

A huge congratulations to all the cast and crew of Puffs, it truly was a sensational performance that will last in the minds of all those who saw it or were involved in it.
