Vaping is a growing problem in society which we have tackled head-on this term.
We take our obligations to monitor student’s health and safety very seriously by providing detailed education about the dangers of vaping through the Health curriculum and a range of guest speakers in PAWS.
All student bathrooms are fitted with vape detectors which are monitored carefully by the Pastoral Care Team. When a vape alert is triggered, our cameras are checked and parents are contacted if their child is in the vicinity of the bathroom when the alert has been activated. Whilst this is not definitive proof of vaping, family discussions around vaping can then be had at home to reenforce the inherent dangers and addictive nature of vaping for young people.
I am pleased to report that this open exchange of information has resulted in a significant drop in vape detections across the school. On behalf of the Heads of Year, I would like to thank those parents who have supported these conversations assisting in the significant reduction in vape alerts across the school. Well done, St George’s.
As we head into the holidays, I would also like to share a range of information and resources about the dangers of vaping which are available through our SchoolTv feed. (See below).
Any change in behaviour starts with a conversation, so I am hopeful that these details are useful for you.
The selection process for the student leaders of 2026 will commence in Term Three. The process will be outlined to all Year 11 students in Week 2 and their nominations for leadership will be due in shortly thereafter. Excitedly, we will be looking for our first Cowan House Captain and School Prefect – Cowan House. The announcement of the new leaders takes place at the Handover Assembly in Term Four.
With a well-deserved three-week break in front of us, I ask students to take some time to prioritise their wellbeing. Spend time with family and friends or just enjoy doing nothing. If you are travelling locally or overseas, safe journey and I look forward to welcoming you back to our new dual campus site on Tuesday 22 July.
