Love Your Library

The City is Our Campus

Five things to love about the City of Perth Library

As well as enjoying all the wonders of our resident Laurence Library, our students also wander down the mall to the City of Perth Library with Mrs Sykiotis as part of our Inspired Minds (Study Skills) program.

By the end of this year, all students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will have visited the City of Perth Library with Mrs Sykiotis for a guided tour by Young People’s Services Librarian Shannon Verbakel.  Students marvel at the ceiling artwork which was inspired by Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest. They also learn about the library’s services while sitting under a Ficus Benjamina (Weeping Fig). This ‘tree of knowledge’ was craned in when the building was completed in 2016. There is also a vertical garden that is Perth’s tallest, comprising more than 3500 plants. Did you know the library is the only vantage point from which to see a small dragon sculpture that adorns the top of St George’s Cathedral? Legend has it that it was left behind after some maintenance a number of years ago. St George’s students love to spot this curiosity!

Top five things to love about the City of Perth Library:

  1. It’s free and easy to join. Students just require a parent/guardian to initially accompany them to the library and show an ID with a current home address and signature. Once a member, students can borrow up to 30 physical items for three weeks. Each item is then automatically renewed unless another member has reserved it. There are no overdue fees. The library’s 60,000+ items are an excellent supplement to the Laurence Library’s smaller on-campus collection.

  2. Students can access tens of thousands of eResources (eBooks, audiobooks, magazines) after completing this form: perth.ent.sirsidynix.net.au/custom/web/external-join.htm

  3. It's close by. The City of Perth Library is, at most, a 10-minute walk from school and is open until 6pm every weekday.

  4. The fifth floor. The Attic is a dedicated space for young people aged 12–24. Bright and well-equipped study rooms can be booked up to a week in advance. These are ideal for collaborative projects. It also has an extensive collection of Young Adult fiction, including manga and graphic novels.

  5.  Events. The City of Perth Library hosts free activities for children and teenagers during the school holidays. For example, students can join award-winning author, Raewyn Caisley, for a morning of creative writing on Friday, July 11. Book here
