Glen Fern Street Kindergarten’s biggest achievements for 2025
By Georgia, Rachel K, Jamie, and Indigo.
In 2025 Glen Fern Street have had many achievements but here are the two that we would like to share. The first being we have been really focussed on engaging with our surrounding community in different ways so that the children can connect with members of the community and develop new knowledge. We have engaged with the community by either having members of our kindergarten community come and interact with the children at the service or adventuring out of the service.
As a team we would firstly like to thank all the children’s family members who volunteered their time to share about their careers or to create special learning experiences with the children. We also had a couple of visits from local dentists and vet providing the children with knowledge of how to take care of their teeth and the pets they have at home. These interactions with the family members, the dentists and the vet allow the children to see the different kinds of jobs that exist in the world, ask any questions they may have in a respectful manner, and show the children they are a part of a larger community network.
We have been lucky enough to explore the community by taking the children to the F.G. Tricks and Tjilatjirrin reserves. The children also got to go and visit Sandringham East Primary School, speak to the Vice-Principal and read a book in their library.
In term 3 Glen Fern Street Kindergarten also engaged a music and movement specialist, Kathleen to help the children develop their confidence through the performing arts, use their gross motor skills whilst also having fun! Throughout the term the children explored different rhythms, interacted with exciting equipment, and learnt some excellent dances.
Another big success for Glen Fern Street Kindergarten is how we have focussed on developing the children’s awareness of body safety and body boundaries from the very beginning of the year. We have talked to children focusing on how we can stay safe around strangers and where to seek help if we don’t feel safe. We have read a range of books and listened to songs throughout the year to prompt the children’s thinking about their safety.
One of the books in this series is called ‘My Safety Network’ from the ‘Little BIG Chats’ series which talks about having 3 to 5 trusted adult that you can talk to if you are feeling unsafe with at least one of those people being someone that is not in their families so either a teacher, family friend or neighbour. The children have drawn their safety networks of who they can trust and put in their portfolios accordingly. Another book we have been emphasised on is ‘Consent’. Children have engaged in interactions with teacher when they were being given different scenarios of what consent means and looks like. They learnt about consent could be shown by verbal and non-verbal means!
Through the learning we aim to respond to Child safe standards and to connect with EYLF Outcome 3 - supporting children to be aware of and develop strategies to support their personal safety, having a sense of body autonomy and boundaries, learning to ask for and give consent, and most importantly, learning ways to tell trusted people about their emotions and experiences that make them feel uncomfortable.
