Our Biggest Achievement: Building Strong Community Connections

This year, our kindergarten’s biggest achievement has been successfully meeting and exceeding our Service Goal Four. Our goal was to strengthen our involvement in the local community by creating meaningful partnerships with local schools and community organisations, while providing children with more opportunities to explore and engage with their surroundings through excursions. 

Why This Matters 

Community connection plays a vital role in early childhood education. Our goal was not just about getting out into the community but about fostering a genuine sense of belonging for every child. This aligns with Learning Outcome Two of the Early Years Learning Framework, which emphasises the importance of children feeling connected to and contributing to their world. When children engage with their community, they develop important social and emotional skills, gain confidence, and learn to navigate new environments. Research shows that these experiences also support language development, as children communicate with a broader range of people and encounter new ideas and vocabulary. Furthermore, community engagement helps children build resilience and confidence, particularly as they prepare to transition into school. Familiar experiences, such as visiting the local primary school or learning about road and water safety, give children the tools they need to approach new situations with a sense of security and curiosity.

How We Achieved It 

One of our proudest initiatives this year has been the Buddy System with Chelsea Primary School, located just across the road. Through regular visits, our children developed friendships with the Grade 5 students, who came to our kindergarten to read stories and engage in shared activities. Later in the year, we extended this program to include visits to the Prep classrooms, helping our children become familiar with the school environment that many will join next year. These interactions have not only strengthened relationships but have also provided a smooth and supportive transition for children as they move into their next stage of learning. 

Another highlight has been the establishment of our Beach Kinder Program, which has quickly become a cornerstone of our curriculum. This program provides children with authentic, hands-on learning experiences in the natural environment. As part of this, we invited members of the local Life Saving Club to talk about water and beach safety, preparing children for the new environment they were about to explore. Our beach visits deepened the children’s understanding of their local area and fostered a strong connection with the community. The program has also encouraged family participation, with many parents volunteering to assist, further strengthening our sense of community and shared purpose. 

In addition, our Road Safety Program has been essential in preparing children for these regular community walks and outings. By inviting our local school crossing supervisor to visit and teach the children about road safety, we ensured they could confidently and safely navigate the paths they now take regularly on walks to the beach and around the neighbourhood. 

We also introduced a Community Fruit Bowl in partnership with our local Woolworths, who generously donate fruit each week. This initiative not only promotes healthy eating but has also provoked rich conversations about local farmers and how different community members grow, share, and contribute food. Through these discussions, children have developed a deeper understanding of where food comes from, sustainability, and the importance of caring for the environment and community. This learning supports early scientific thinking, curiosity, and a sense of gratitude. 

Looking Ahead 

The team at Glen Chelsea Kindergarten is extremely proud of what we have achieved this year. Our educators, families and children have all contributed to creating a strong sense of connection and pride within our local community. We look forward to continuing to build these partnerships in 2026 and beyond, ensuring every child continues to feel a true sense of belonging, both within our kindergarten and the wider world around them.
