All about Electrocity
We are all set for Fringe Festival
Meet our performers preparing to play original music at Perth’s Fringe Festival. Band member Blake Hutton explains what Electrocity is all about.
Electrocity is a dynamic music group from St George’s that merges traditional instruments with cutting-edge electronic soundscaping. Electrocity has evolved since its inception in 2016 into a permanent ensemble where students are encouraged to push musical boundaries and create their own sound. Blending sampling, looping, live electronics, instrumental performance and sound design, the group takes advantage of the unique opportunities provided by the music department to create captivating compositions ranging from jazzy funk vibes to lush, layered soundscapes.
What will this year’s band, In Sync with the City, take to Fringe in 2025?
We are ready to showcase the vibrant talent of St George’s Anglican Grammar School, drawing inspiration from the dynamic sounds and rhythms of our city. We have created a setlist that captures the essence of urban life through a fusion of live instruments, electronic beats and innovative soundscapes.
In Sync with the City celebrates the spirit of Perth by incorporating locally recorded ambient sounds, reimagined through cutting-edge technology and student creativity. Our performance promises to be an exciting exploration of connection, culture, and the unique energy of our city—an unforgettable Fringe experience that highlights the artistic talent thriving in Perth.
How do you workshop song ideas?
Our music-writing process is all about blending creativity with innovation. We start with a spark—sometimes it is a melody, a rhythm, or even a recorded sound from the world around us. Using tools like Ableton Live we transform these ideas into loops and samples, layering them with live performances from traditional instruments and vocals. Experimenting is key to our process of workshopping. The band is very lucky to have very talented musicians who can create on the fly and improvise. This is one of the main ways in which Electrocity is able to create music with textures, harmonies, and electronic effects to craft pieces that are funky, haunting, or completely unexpected.
As well as the live show, do you record tracks too?
Yes, we record all our music! After each Fringe Festival performance, we take our setlist into the studio, recording, mixing, and mastering every track. These are released on our website and streaming platforms for everyone to enjoy.
Stay tuned for ticket information in the new year.
