Love Your Library

Mr Alex Hanssen

Meet the 2025 Library Team

As we turn the page to a new year, we figure it is time to introduce your Library team for 2025.

Mr Hanssen: Head of Library, Technologies, and Research Services

I specialise in teaching Digital Technologies, Applied Information Technology, and Computer Science. In 2025, I will be moving into the role of Head of Library, Technologies, and Research Services.

In terms of literature, I love stories that challenge perspectives, whether through intricate mysteries or philosophical themes. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell is a personal favourite! When not reading, I enjoy playing board games with friends and engaging in video games that tell deep narratives. I’m thrilled to bring my enthusiasm for learning and digital technologies to The Laurence Library.

Ms Belyea, Library Technician

I have been with St George’s since Term Three, 2023, and I like a broad range of books with no specific favourite genre. Each year I challenge myself to the Goodreads Challenge of completing at least one book a month.

The Laurence Library has become a vibrant part of the school, with students coming in and sharing their love of books, crafts and all that is Lego. I feel very privileged to share this space with them.

I believe that a school library is a safe space where people are free to discuss things openly and explore their views of the worlds or just take a moment for some quiet space.

We often have a solid mix of readers, students studying and enthusiastic discussion groups in the library during recess and lunch. I am excited for 2025 and a new generation of the Laurence Library.

Tamsin Sykiotis, Teacher Librarian

I grew up in a very book-oriented family. My great aunt was part of a book club that lasted for more than 60 years! I love the way that books can bring people together and help us to empathise with others’ stories. Many of my favourite books are memoirs. For example, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Against All Odds by the two Australians who were pivotal to the rescue of the Thai soccer team from a flooded cave. I had known nothing about cave diving previously and I was so impressed by this feat of engineering,

medicine and athleticism. Some of my favourite authors are Geraldine Brooks, Haruki Murakami, Craig Silvey, David Malouf, Charlotte Bronte, Annie Ernaux and Xinran. I also enjoy reading and writing poetry. I’ve been reading some children’s classics with my 7-year-old son, such as Mary Poppins and The Wizard of Oz, and it is surprising how different they are from the movies! Next year, we are adding graphic novels to our collection, and I can not wait to devour some of these beautiful books. I suspect that they will be very popular.

I started this part-time role in July last year and it’s been a blast so far! My teaching load includes Chinese, which is one of my passions. I’ve also taught French, English and Literature in the past. This year, I’ve taught Study Skills to students in Years 7, 8 and 9 as part of an Inspired Minds program. I’ve really enjoyed helping Year 7 students to make the best use of the physical and digital resources that we have available in the Laurence Library and the CBD. They have also learnt to better manage their time and use more active study methods. The Year 8 and 9 program helps students to more effectively search for and evaluate sources, paraphrase information and cite it correctly. I’m looking forward to rolling out a new program for the Year 9 cohort of 2025. It will aim to equip them with the study skills that they will need to reach their goals in Years 10 – 12. My role also extends to curating and creating resources that support the English department’s syllabus and Wider Reading program. I am lucky to work alongside fellow book-nerd, Emily Belyea, to grow the reading culture at our school.
