A Dynamic Start to the Year for VCE/VET Sport, Aquatics and Recreation
The VCE/VET Sport, Aquatics and Recreation students have made a fantastic start to the 2026 school year, engaging in a combination of theoretical learning and practical, real-world experiences. Both Unit 1&2 and Unit 3&4 students have been actively developing their knowledge and skills in key areas such as workplace health and safety, first aid, emergency response, and recreation leadership.
Unit 1&2: Building Skills Beyond the Classroom
It has been a productive and hands-on term for our Unit 1 & 2 students, who have been building a strong foundation in workplace health and safety, first aid, and responding to emergency situations. Through a range of practical activities, students have developed their ability to identify and assess risks, participate in emergency response simulations, and completed their first aid qualification, a terrific qualification and life skill to have.

A key focus this term has been developing skills in planning, conducting, and evaluating recreation sessions. Students gained an understanding of the key elements required to deliver effective sessions and then put this into practice by assisting in the delivery of activities to a variety of groups. It has been fantastic to see their confidence and capability grow as they continue to develop these important leadership skills.
Students also successfully completed their workplace health and safety learning and had the opportunity to apply this knowledge in real-world contexts.
The highlight of the term was an exciting hands-on experience at Urbansurf. Throughout the day, students applied their theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting by identifying hazards, analysing safety signage, participating in first aid scenarios, developing an understanding of rips, and practicing water rescues. The experience also included a surfing session, where many students caught waves for the first time—along with a few entertaining wipeouts! It was a fantastic way to bring together their learning in a fun, engaging, and practical environment.

Overall, it has been great to see students developing their practical skills, confidence, and understanding of the recreation industry throughout the term.
Unit 3&4: Leadership at Year 7 Camp
The Unit 3&4 students began the year with a fantastic leadership opportunity at the Year 7 camp. During the camp, VET REC students took on significant responsibility in facilitating and supporting a range of activities including bushwalking, night activities, canoeing, low ropes, raft building and assisting with meal times.
Throughout the camp, they applied their classroom learning in a real-world setting, guiding and supporting the Year 7 students while continuing to refine their leadership, communication and facilitation skills. The experience allowed students to step into leadership roles, work as a team and support younger students as they challenged themselves with new activities.
The feedback from camp staff was overwhelmingly positive, with high praise for the professionalism, organisation and leadership demonstrated by our VET REC students. Staff also commented on the fantastic connections formed between the Year 7 students and the VET REC leaders. It was inspiring to see the senior students role-modelling positive behaviour and encouraging younger students to step outside their comfort zones.

As part of preparing for leadership roles in recreation environments, Unit 3&4 students also completed an update of their CPR training, ensuring their first aid qualifications remain current. Maintaining these qualifications is extremely valuable, not only when leading group recreation activities but also as an essential life skill that can make a real difference in emergency situations.

Congratulations to all of our VCE/VET Sport, Aquatics and Recreation students on a fantastic start to the year. Your enthusiasm, commitment and leadership have set a strong foundation for an exciting and rewarding year ahead.
