Careers & Pathways Le

Our Weekly Careers Newsletter

A reminder that each week we publish a Careers Newsletter that is full of information about coming events, tertiary education and training, jobs and careers.

For example this week's edition has information on things such as: Virtual Open Days, how to join airlines as a cabin crew member, a career as a dental technician, Film and Television courses, physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopath and what it’s like to study food or tourism at William Angliss Institute and more! Each edition is quite different with a wide variety of topics covered. It's well worth a browse as you never know what you might find.

The newsletters are downloadable from the Warrandyte High Careers portal at warrandytehighcareers.com

This site also has links to the most important careers information for both students and parents.

Year 9 Morrisby Appraisals

This is an annual service provided by the Department of Education, whereby every Year 9 student is given the opportunity to undertake a Morrisby profile. The testing takes around 2 hours (with a break) and looks at student's relative strengths in verbal, numerical, spatial, abstract and mechanical skills and reasoning. There are no right or wrong answers! There is also a snapshot of the students' interests, preferences and motivations. A comprehensive report is created and available to download from a secure, personal Morrisby online portal.

After the profiling, students have an individual, 30 minute interview with a Morrisby Careers expert to help unpack the results. Parents are welcome to join in this interview.

In addition to the report, the personal webspace also features:

*Career suggestions tailored to your abilities, interests, personality and preferences

*Help with choosing Year 11/12 subjects

*Thousands of links to further information covering careers, education and training

All of the results and recommendations are available both in this report and in a dynamic and interactive format on the website. Every time a student makes a change to their preferences on the Morrisby Profile, this report will update and can be downloaded again.

The student retains this portal space for life. Parent resources are also available to support your child in their use of Morrisby results. This year's profiling takes place on Friday April 24th.

Year 9 parents should visit Compass events for details of the appraisal next term, and to consent to their child's participation. Please feel free to contact me, if you have any questions.

Vocational Major - VM

Students in VM recently undertook First Aid training to achieve competencies in Provide Basic Emergency Life Support and Provide First Aid, which are not only really important skills to have, but also look great on the students' resumes. Before the end of term, students will undertake White Card training, which is the Workplace Health and Safety requirement for working on a construction site. Students will also be undertaking a Food Handling and Responsible Service of Alcohol qualification next term. Term 3 involves Barista making training, which aids students in seeking part-time employment.

Our students will also participate in VET Public Safety certificates at Year 11 and 12. It's a busy year for VM students!

Year 10 Work Experience June 22 -26

It's great to see Year 10's looking for interesting Work Experience positions for the last week of Term 2. A number of students have already returned their forms with some interesting placements.

Work experience has many beneficial aspects (even if students already have a part time job). These include:

  • an understanding of the work environment and what employers expect of their workers
  • an opportunity to explore possible career options
  • increased self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence
  • increased motivation to continue study and/or undertake further training
  • a better understanding of how the school curriculum can help prepare young people for work
  • an introduction to workplace recruitment practices
  • enhanced opportunities for part-time and casual employment
  • the opportunity to include the employer's work experience evaluation in future job and course applications
  • opportunities to develop work-related competencies and acquire skills
  • the chance to 'try out' a workplace.

Please contact me if you can offer a Year 10 student some work experience.
