VCE Art Creative Practice students spent an inspiring day at Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Fed Square on Friday March 13. They were the first students in the state to experience the Top Arts exhibition and had the unique opportunity to meet several of the exhibiting artists. These informal, student-to-student conversations allowed our learners to gain valuable first-hand insight into the creative process, making the experience both authentic and highly engaging. It was particularly meaningful for students to connect with the artists behind the work and hear about their journeys.
Prior to seeing the exhibition, students participated in an interactive session with the curator before exploring the Visual Arts Diaries. This continues to be one of the most insightful and motivating aspects of the visit, offering a deeper understanding of the development of ideas and artistic practice at a VCE level.
We were especially impressed by our students’ willingness to actively participate in discussions, ask thoughtful questions, and engage in critical thinking about the artworks they encountered. Their curiosity, openness, and maturity as emerging artists were evident throughout the day.
At lunchtime, students explored the diverse food options Melbourne has to offer, before regrouping to visit the Australian Collection. We concluded the day with a walk through Hosier Lane, where students experienced the dynamic and ever-changing nature of street art. This provided a striking contrast to the gallery setting and highlighted the breadth of contemporary art practices and spaces.
