Term 1 Interschool Sport

By: Katie Cook - Sport Coordinator

It has been an outstanding and action-packed term of sport at Warrandyte High School, with students across multiple year levels demonstrating commitment, resilience and pride in representing the school.

Our Senior Volleyball teams set the tone with an incredible day of competition, with 41 students representing the school across six teams. The standard of play was exceptional, with four teams winning their pools and two progressing through to finals. Our Year 11 girls showed great determination against strong opposition, while the Year 12 boys delivered a dominant Grand Final performance to be crowned champions and now progress to the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Finals. Just as impressive as the results was the team spirit on display, with students supporting one another and proudly representing the school.

In the swimming pool, students from Years 7–12 delivered a fantastic performance at the Divisional Swimming Carnival. Despite being a small team, our swimmers showed incredible commitment and teamwork throughout the day, achieving several standout individual results along with strong relay performances. Highlights included multiple third-place finishes and an impressive result in the 16 Year Old Boys Freestyle Relay. The encouragement and support shown between students was a true reflection of Warrandyte’s strong team culture.

We also celebrate the outstanding individual achievement of Year 10 student Sierra West, who represented the Chisholm region at the Victorian State Netball Titles. Competing as a bottom-age player in the Under 17 team, Sierra played a key role in her team’s success across three days and 19 matches. After finishing top of the ladder, the team went on to win a thrilling Grand Final in extra time to be crowned State Champions. A remarkable accomplishment and a testament to Sierra’s dedication and hard work.

Our Senior Table Tennis team embraced a highly competitive day against strong opposition, demonstrating resilience, persistence and excellent sportsmanship. While results didn’t always go our way, there were many highlights, including closely contested matches, a memorable doubles game that showcased great sportsmanship, and a confident final-round win. The team represented the school with pride and positivity throughout the day.

Similarly, our Senior Basketball teams showed great determination, competing with limited numbers but never wavering in effort or attitude. There were some closely fought games and excellent displays of teamwork and skill, with students consistently giving their best against strong opposition. With no other school entering a Senior Girls Soccer team this provided an automatic win to the girls and progression to the Regional Finals in July. The day was particularly meaningful for some of our Year 12 students, who proudly represented the school for the final time in interschool sport.

Our Intermediate Volleyball and Tennis teams followed the tone set by our senior students, demonstrating determination, growth and outstanding sportsmanship. Seven students represented Warrandyte in Intermediate Tennis and, despite strong competition, embraced every challenge throughout the day. For some, it was their first experience in a competitive tennis setting, and it was fantastic to see the encouragement and support shared among teammates.

At Intermediate Volleyball, the Boys A team played some excellent matches, winning their first three games and their pool to progress to finals. While they faced very strong opposition in the final, they stepped up to the challenge and continued to support one another throughout. The Year 10 girls team showed incredible determination, at times playing with no rotations and even a player down. Their teamwork, communication and strategic play were excellent, and they represented Warrandyte High School with pride. WHS also entered B teams in both the boys and girls competitions, made up entirely of Year 9 students. Despite often being undersized, these students demonstrated resilience and determination, lifting each other when faced with challenges and displaying the passion and pride that defines our school. Well done to all intermediate students involved in their Term 1 interschool sporting competitions.

Our Year 8 students have wrapped up the term in style, taking their hard work from training sessions onto the court for an outstanding day of interschool volleyball. Building on the strong performances of our senior and intermediate teams, the Year 8s were determined to continue the success, and they certainly delivered.

The Boys A team were exceptional throughout the pool stage, going undefeated across their three matches. Their gameplay featured impressive rallies, excellent teamwork, and smart strategic decision-making. In a tightly contested semi-final, the boys left everything on the court. While the result didn’t fall their way, their resilience and determination to fight for every point was outstanding. They bounced back strongly in the consolation final, securing a convincing win and an impressive 3rd place overall (out of 12 teams).

The Girls A team also had a fantastic day, competing with limited rotations but never letting that slow them down. They played some high-quality volleyball, working cohesively as a team and showing great skill and persistence. After going down in the semi-final, they also fought hard in the consolation final however fatigue eventually set in finish a commendable 4th overall (out of 9 teams). A terrific achievement.

Our Mixed B team truly embodied the Warrandyte spirit. Made up of six girls and two boys, they took on predominantly all-boys teams without hesitation. Their determination, teamwork, and willingness to challenge themselves was inspiring. The team consistently strategised, supported one another, and pushed their opponents in every match, earning the respect of all teams they faced.

The success of the day was also made possible by our outstanding Year 9–11 helpers and officials. Greta, Ally, Charlotte, Layla, Yousof, and Tate did a brilliant job managing teams, ensuring organisation ran smoothly, offering coaching advice, and providing constant encouragement. Meanwhile, Brodie, Montie, Adam, Liam, Jai, Hunter, Dash, and Josh took on the responsibility of officiating across the entire day. They demonstrated exceptional integrity, professionalism, and leadership, earning praise from staff at other schools for their confidence, fairness, and ability to support younger players through clear explanations and guidance.

We are incredibly proud of all students involved. Their effort, sportsmanship, and teamwork made it a highly successful and enjoyable day for everyone.

We are looking forward to seeing what our Year 7 students produce at their first interschool sporting event at the end of the term.

Across all sports, it has been a term defined not just by results, but by the way our students have supported one another, embraced challenges and represented Warrandyte High School with pride, energy and outstanding sportsmanship.

We are all looking forward to seeing what the students can achieve in term 2 when they take on the challenge of a different sport.
