OPEN NIGHT 2026

By: Joseph Caruana

Last night Warrandyte High School opened its doors and showcased its teachers, programs and facilities to prospective families. Not wanting to be left out, the heavens also opened and heavy rain became an additional feature to the night. But it didn’t in any way dampen the excitement, energy and enthusiasm that made OPEN NIGHT 2026 truly special.

A family barbeque commenced the evening. It was lovely seeing so many prospective families mingling with current staff and students in a relaxed, fun setting. Luke Ventieri, the Principal of Warrandyte, opened official proceedings. Luke provided an exciting snapshot of the school, including: “Our student wellbeing results were consistently above similar schools and state averages. NAPLAN results saw our Year 9 students achieve strong growth when measured against their Year 7 results. More specifically, Year 9 Reading results saw 85% of students placed within the top two proficiently levels, coupled with 80% of students in Numeracy placing within the top two proficiency levels. A tremendous result that placed Warrandyte High School in the category of outperforming network schools, similar schools and state benchmarks.”

As part of the Principal’s address, which took place in the theatre, two of the Year 12 School Captains spoke to the sea of curious faces. Isla, one of the School Captains, shared: “Attending a smaller school has allowed me to build strong, meaningful relationships. It also creates an environment where new students can quickly feel comfortable and settle in. Our teachers and staff are approachable and supportive, always making students feel safe and confident to ask questions or seek help when needed.”

“I have seen many positive improvements across the school during my time at Warrandyte High School,” Jack, the other school captain told the crowd, “including upgrades to the Art and Technology facilities and the refurbishments of the toilets.”

Important to capture the voice of current Year 7 students, Emily, who joined Warrandyte High School this year from Anderson’s Creek PS, shared her experiences thus far: “A big part of the transition program that really helped me was the Year 7 Camp. If you love Basketball or AFL, there is the special program for both. If you love STEM or ART or DRAMA, you can choose to do one of those special programs.” Emily is participating in the special Drama program: “Lights! Camera! Action!” As Emily said on the night, “I am really enjoying it.”

Hunter, one of our Year 7s from Yarra Road PS, was also very happy to share his reflections which included: “There is also a whole lot of inter-school sport teams you can join: these include volleyball, tennis and netball. Every two years there is the Italy Trip. The last Italy trip happened in 2025: the students got to visit Venice, Rome, Sorrento, Florence and other awesome cities in Italy. I am hoping to go on the 2027 Italy Experience.”

Hunter’s concluding words to the prospective families in the theatre were: “I am really happy here at Warrandyte High School.”
