Food Studies

This term in Food Studies, our Year 8 students have been building strong foundational cooking skills and developing confidence in the kitchen.

Students began by learning the essentials of kitchen safety and hygiene, including safe food handling practices, correct use of equipment, and the importance of maintaining a clean and organised workspace. These skills are a vital part of becoming safe and independent cooks.

They also focused on measuring ingredients accurately, understanding how precision contributes to successful cooking outcomes. Alongside this, students practiced important knife skills, learning how to handle knives safely and correctly while mastering cuts such as the julienne.

Throughout the term, students enjoyed preparing a variety of dishes that allowed them to apply these new skills. Some highlights included apricot lattice, sausage rolls, and Hokkien noodle stir-fry.

In Year 9 Creating Global Flavours, students have been exploring dishes from around the world. So far, they have prepared recipes such as dumplings, gnocchi and spanakopita, developing new skills while learning about different cuisines.

In Year 10 Food for Life, students have challenged themselves with more advanced techniques. They have learned to make a smooth hollandaise sauce, poach a perfect egg, and ferment their own vegetables.

It has been wonderful to see students’ enthusiasm and growing confidence in the kitchen, and we look forward to another exciting term of learning and cooking.
