Health & PE

The Health and PE Faculty has had a strong start to 2026, with plenty of planning, preparation and new ideas coming together across late Term Four and into the beginning of this year. We have also had a few staffing changes across the faculty and wider team.

We recently farewelled Kyle Monaghan and thank him for everything he contributed to the school and our students during his time with us. We are also excited to welcome Jaimee Jurcic to the team as our new Health, PE and Sport Assistant. In addition, we welcome Justine Bowers, who has stepped into the Student Engagement and Wellbeing 9/10 role and brings a wealth of experience into our domain.

Students in both Health and PE have settled into new classes quickly and have started the year with great energy. Despite some challenging weather, participation has remained high and students have continued to get involved and have a go.

Year 7 and 8 students are currently working through fitness testing and setting personal goals. It has been pleasing to see so many students pushing themselves and taking pride in their effort. These year levels have also begun athletics preparation in the lead-up to our House Athletics Carnival in Term Two.

Year 9 students will soon complete their Fitness Centre induction, where they will learn how to train safely and develop their own fitness programs. Once this is complete, students from Year 9 through to Year 12 will be able to access the cardio and weights room during out of class times, provided they are appropriately dressed and check in with a PE teacher on duty.

Our Year 10 PE program has had a fantastic Term One with students being exposed to a wide variety of non-traditional physical activities such as: Circus skills, Breakdance and Hip Hop, Boxing and Self Defence, Lawn Bowls at Richmond Union Bowls Club and fitness classes at Cycle Collective and Core Plus in Richmond.

The Introduction to Exercise Physiology class is currently pushing themselves at Hurt Locker in Richmond on a Monday afternoon as part of their unit on developing fitness programs.

The Sports Action Management class are looking forward to beginning their AFL Umpiring Course in Term Two, where students will then have the opportunity to umpire AFL Auskick games on the MCG!

Overall, it has been a great start to the year and we’re looking forward to what’s ahead in 2026.

Our new MGC Run Club is officially off to a flying start! Every Wednesday at lunch, students are swapping their school shoes for runners to enjoy the fresh air and stunning scenery along the Yarra River. It is a fantastic way to break up the school day, clear your head, and make the most of the beautiful natural trails right on our doorstep.

The club is designed for everyone, regardless of fitness level. Whether you are a seasoned runner, a casual jogger, or prefer a brisk walk with friends, you are more than welcome to join the pack. With a flexible "come and go" approach, there’s no pressure to attend every week simply join us whenever it suits your schedule.

We have already seen an incredible response, with over 30 students from across various year levels participating. It is quickly becoming a great social hub to meet new people outside of your usual classes. Plus, to keep the motivation high, every runner receives a stamp card to track their progress and work toward winning some exciting prizes. Grab your water bottle and meet us this Wednesday at the start of lunch!
