It has been a positive start to the year at Melbourne Girls’ College, and we are pleased to welcome both new and returning students and families to our community. We look forward to the opportunities the year will bring and to supporting every student throughout their learning journey.

We warmly congratulate our Year 7 students on the way they have begun their secondary school journey. Starting at a new school is a significant milestone, and it has been wonderful to see them settling in, building confidence and approaching each day with such enthusiasm.

Our Year 8 students have also made an excellent return to school. Through the Settling In program, they have re-established routines and embraced the wide range of opportunities available to them. From creative and practical subjects to new challenges and experiences, their curiosity and involvement continue to strengthen the life of the College.

There is much to look forward to in the months ahead, and we are excited about the learning, achievements and connections that will shape the year.

The Year 7 cohort has settled in well over the first few weeks. They took part in a settling-in program designed to help them build connections and get familiar with the school, finding their classrooms, understanding their timetable, and learning the day-to-day routines. It’s been great to see their confidence grow so quickly.

Camp at Arrabri Lodge in Warburton was a real highlight. Taking place in just Week 3, it was a big effort from our Year 7 students, many of whom were still getting to know each other. Students embraced the experience, stepped outside their comfort zones, and formed new friendships quickly. The “Minute to Win It” challenges, music trivia, bush dancing and pool hangs were definite favourites. The march flies were not as popular!

Students also took part in their first Year 7 Swimming Carnival, with strong participation across events and great support for one another throughout the day.

Year 7 students also recently took part in a Reptile Encounters incursion as part of their Physical World studies. The session introduced students to a range of reptiles and how they survive in different environments, with the chance to see them up close. It was a fun and engaging experience, with plenty of excitement (and a few brave volunteers!).

We’re looking forward to seeing this group continue to settle in and make the most of the year ahead.

Year 8 students at Melbourne Girls' College have had a vibrant and engaging start to Term One.

A highlight of the term was our Pedal Power Cinema, where the Year 8 cohort hopped on bikes to generate enough energy to power a screening of Jumanji. This fun and hands-on experience not only brought plenty of laughs but also reinforced important concepts around sustainability and renewable energy.

Students have also made an exciting start in their language classes, exploring either French or Chinese. They have begun developing their communication skills while gaining an appreciation for different cultures, setting the stage for continued learning throughout the year.

Our Year 8 students have also represented the college with pride in interschool sport this term. The Volleyball and Cricket teams both achieved fantastic results, finishing in 1st place, while Tennis and Futsal teams also performed strongly, each placing 3rd. We congratulate all students involved for their teamwork, effort, and sportsmanship.

We would like to give a special shout out to our wonderful Year 8 students who performed in the Harmony Day assembly. Their confidence, talent, and celebration of diversity made for a memorable and meaningful event for the whole school community.

We’re incredibly proud of the positive start our Year 8 cohort has made and look forward to all the exciting opportunities still to come this year.
