Year 6 students were asked to share what has made them proud this term. They were encouraged to think about activities completed whilst at school but also about achievements they have made outside of school. It has been amazing to see the talent that has been hiding in Year 6, here are some examples we would like to share!

Sustainable Environment Services award - Tanya S

My experience at the 7 News Young Achievers Awards was incredible and something I will never forget. I was a semi finalist for the IKON Sustainable Environment Services. I had the opportunity to become a semi finalist because of my effort to educate people about the harmful effects of palm oil. My efforts include presenting to my sister's grade about the effect it’s having on orangutans and ways to prevent using palm oil. I also tried to limit the products my family uses that contain palm oil. On top of me getting an award I also won my dance competition just the day before. My dance group were also told by me about the harmful effects of palm oil. Informing people about the harmful effects of palm oil made me realise that I should do something more for the environment.

That’s why I started a campaign to educate people about the impact littered cigarette butts make on the environment. NO BUTTS ABOUT IT wants the councils to add more cigarette butt bins around our city. A Great Gymnast - Kiara

Hi my names Kiara and I go to PIT gymnastics. I am a level 3 tumblers girl. My big achievement this term was I moved up to level 3 and achieved my back handspring. PIT gymnastics is a great place to go to and they mostly have spaces. I love seeing all my friends there and learning new skills. My favourite skill is bars. Beam is my all time weakness. Cricket Champion - Kris

When I was 7 I always wanted to play cricket and when I turned 9 I started playing Under 10s for South Morang Lions. I also played with my friends which was really good. I was a batter at the start and then when I got older I turned into a bowler. I always looked up to my dad because he was a really good at cricket. I went to the cricket nets to train as hard as I could. When I turned 10 I started playing Under 12s and I was so excited because in Under 12s there is a ladder and finals.

When I played I got better and better and in one of my games I got a hat trick which means I got 3 wickets in a row. And when it got to the end of the season we had a presentation I was so excited because you have a chance of getting trophies. When it came to my team I got 2 trophies and 1 hat trick ball. The trophies I got were the bowling award for getting 9 wickets. My other trophie was called the Peter Baset award it was for the best teammate. I was so happy that I got all those awards. Cricket is my favourite sport.

Collingwood is eighth on the ladder,

Richmond is a lot more sadder,

We ate Saints like they were on a platter.

Collingwood should never get rid of him.

He is a well known star

National Junior Classic - Xavier K

Recently on the Queens Birthday weekend, I played in the Kumon National Junior Classic where it was streamed on TV and I played against all the best teams in the country. We ended up finished being ranked 2nd in Australia. I’m playing against a lot of kids that are older than me who are already 13 years old and I’m just turning 12 in a couple months. My rep team also qualified for the national tournament that will be streamed on Kayo Sports and I will be competing with the best kids in all of Australia. I have been asked to tryout for the Victorian state team and I have another tryout for the state selection. At my age there is only around 10 other kids in the whole of Victoria that are playing at my level.

Rocking it in Rugby! - Donny

When I was 5 I started a big win streak of my rugby career, we went on to win 9 games in a row. A year later me and my brother Dusty moved to Under 8 where all of my best mates were, we won all our games except 2-3 and we won the local cup for Rugby Victoria plus I won the medal of “played the best”. When I moved up to Under 11 a couple years later most of our players have left but a little stayed. My dad has been my coach for six years and he had not much to work with including players who are unable to listen and concentrate. We have played 4 games and we tied only one. Lastly our club ELTHAM Victoria has been open for 50 years and I played 6 years of it which came with a medal of loyalty. Rugby Is My Favourite Sport!

Creative Writing - Jiya

I would like to share a piece I wrote this year.

The Door

“5,6,7…” I bolted around my warm, little home trying to find the best hiding spot possible.”8,9,10!” I finally settled under my bed. “Ready or not here I come!”

“Scrape” what was that? It probably someone trying to scare me, right? “Scrape” The faint scraping noise rung furiously in my ears as I tried to ignore it. ”That’s it!” I called, desperately trying to find where the noise had come from. I shuddered creeping closer to the rusty, wooden door of my old dusty cupboard. My small blue eyes fell upon a minuscule hole and couldn’t resist peaking through it. “Wooh” l gasped as an scene like no other blessed my eyes. Hoping for a better look l swung open the door.

My eyes glowed a deep blue as a soft mist filled my vision. Bright blue sparked arouse from the dusty wooden floor. My long brown hair swayed gently as my body lifted off the ground, my heart slowed down, the tenseness in my body disappearing and I was gone…

I awoke to the smell of fresh soil and little jets of clear water mist lightly spraying my face, as I sat up, rubbing my eyes. The vivid imagery that had filled my eyes when I gasped through the hole blessed my eyes once more, tall leafy green trees stood amongst the array of birds and animals. Bushes shook gently in the breeze, as luminous lake-water lapped creating low sounds.

The bushes began to shake vigorously, and the earth began to rumble. Huh? What was happening? Was there an earthquake? I soon found myself to be wrong as the bushes cleared to see... A bunny? ”Roarrrrr!!!” A deafening roar filled my ears as a beast like no other stepped out, it looked a lot like a bear except it was as massive as a towering skyscraper. I quivered as the bear scooped me up and stuffed me in it’s mouth.

Pushing as hard as I possibly could, using up my entire strength, I pried open the deadly jaws of the massive bear. I stood up, laying my hands of the roof of its mouth. Straining my body onward, I knew I had to get out, and fast but how? I couldn’t just run for it, I might get sliced in half by those dagger sharp teeth. An idea entered my brain as I pushed my aching right hand onward, and reaching my left hand into my pant pocket. There’s always something useful in there. I rummaged around, trying to find something that would help me in this situation. An eraser, no. A starfish, no. Wait a starfish? What was that doing there? ”Ahh hah!” I pulled out a giant stick that I had collected on a walk which was even taller than me. “I knew this would come in handy some day!” I jammed the stick in between the bear’s jaws, finally relieving my limbs of the disastrous pain they were going through. Squinting, I leapt, unable to bear the moment my aching body would fall upon the muddy ground, but my hands latched on to a vine and I jumped as I reached the closet.

Swinging open the door, my eyes glowing deep ocean, sparks rose once more , as my body lifted off the ground. My hair swished gently as my vision faded, and I was gone.

I soon found myself crouching near the cupboards door. ”Ah ha!, found you!” I turned to see friend looking at me, puzzled. “What happened?” She asked as I was still dripping with bear spit. “It’s kind of a long story.”
