Aerobics & Dance

We have had a busy time for the MGSC Aerobics and Dance Squad. We have our biggest group and highest number of entries this year which is really exciting. We also have our first dance troupe. 😊

Showcase

On Monday 28 April, we had the 2025 Aerobics and Dance Showcase. Over 260 family and friends attended the event in the gym which is a dress rehearsal for the upcoming competitions. It was a brilliant night that showcased all of the hard work from the coaches and students. Our Aerobics Captain Caitlyn Shawel spoke to all of our guests about her aerobics and dance journey at MGSC.

Hi everyone,

I’m Caitlyn, the 2025 Aerobics Captain! Thank you all so much for coming tonight, I know it means a lot to everyone to see so many faces out there when they’re performing. Just to share a bit about myself, aerobics has been a massive part of my life since when I was in Year 5 in 2018, and I’ve competed in solos, teams, audition and dance between then and last year. This year I’m lucky enough to be coaching one of our Year 7 teams, the Baby Blues, and I also perform in a national ensemble for calisthenics outside of school.

I think anyone who knows me would agree when I say that if 10 years ago I told someone this was what I was doing with my life now they would’ve laughed at me and said absolutely not. I was the kind of kid that was scared of getting certificates or awards because I didn’t want to get up in assembly in front of everyone, and now I spend a large portion of my life performing in theatres.

It’s safe to say that the aerobics program here at MGSC has definitely played a part in shaping who I am today. I’ve been lucky to form such strong friendships with so many girls that I’ve competed in teams with, not only my age but some older and some younger than me. This is my third year coaching, and I’m so glad I took the opportunity to when I was in Year 10, it’s challenged me and pushed me outside my comfort zone at times but I love every minute of it and it’s nights like tonight where it’s so rewarding to see things coming together properly for the first time.

I certainly wouldn’t be standing here without the support of the amazing coaches I’ve had over the past five years. Some of these coaches here today were coaching when I was in Year 7, and it’s crazy to think that the position I’m in now is where they were just a couple years ago. They’ve all helped me grow not only as a performer and as I’ve begun my coaching journey but also just generally as a person as I’ve gone through high school.

And finally as I wrap this up I think we owe a massive thank you to Ms Molina. This program and this night would not be possible without you and we are all so grateful for the endless hours you spend keeping everything organised and running smoothly. Thank you for everything you do.

I can’t wait to see what this year has in store for our massive squad and I hope you’ve all enjoyed seeing the beginning of it tonight!

Thank you

Regional competition

On the first Saturday and Sunday of May the Aerobics and Dance squad travelled to Rowville Secondary College to compete in the first major competition of the year - Regionals / State qualifiers. With over 45 entries from our school, the weekend was full of lots of nerves as well as excitement as everyone anticipated announcements throughout the day to hear who had qualified for the next competition - State Finals.

There was so much improvement in all of the routines and lots of exciting results but the best thing to see was the sportsmanship each member of our squad showed to their peers, cheering each other on from side stage. We are also grateful to the strong band of parents in the audience making noise each time we hit the stage!!

We had 40 of the 46 entries qualify for States, which will be held on the last weekend of May. Our squad will be returning to training this week to prepare for States with our focus on making the cut off to compete at Nationals in August.

Keep up the hard work!
