College Matters

Term 2 is well underway, and we’ve hit the ground running with a range of exciting initiatives and opportunities for both staff and students at MGSC.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve had the pleasure of visiting several of our local primary schools. These visits strengthen our connections with the community and allow us to share the many achievements of our College. Our recent Show and Tell Open Night was a fantastic success, with over 500 visitors attending on the night as we showcased the aerobics program, symphonic band, had live experiments take place and students share their insights into the MGSC way. In addition, our ongoing school tours have welcomed many prospective families as Year 6 students submitted their high school preferences last week. We are thrilled to be planning ahead and eagerly anticipate the enrolment period. Enrolments for 2026 will be confirmed with our local primary schools from 1 July 2025.

Staff at MGSC have also been fortunate to engage in some valuable professional learning this term. We welcomed James Nottingham, creator of The Learning Pit, who worked with staff on the vital connection between student engagement, thinking, and improved learning outcomes. His insights sparked deep reflection and conversation among our team, and we look forward to building on this work into the future.

Our collaboration with MacRobertson Girls’ Secondary College has also continued to flourish. Their recent visit included a series of learning walks through our classrooms, where we explored classroom layouts, entry and exit routines, and how our staff consistently embed the MGSC values into everyday practice. The relationship between our two schools has been an enriching professional journey, providing both affirmation of our strengths and valuable insights into areas for continued growth.

Exams

Students in Years 9, 10, and 11 will sit Semester 1 examinations in weeks 8 and 9 of this term. The exam timetable will be shared with students and parents/carers soon.

Students can prepare for the exams by:

  • Starting revision now and planning. Students should break their exam preparation into small chunks over several weeks rather than cramming the week or night before.
  • Try a range of study techniques - instead of just re-reading, students should consider making flashcards, mind maps, or teaching someone else.
  • Create a realistic study timetable: Students should balance study time with breaks, exercise, and rest to keep their brain fresh.
  • Complete revision material that is provided by teachers, such as practice exams and questions. This helps students to get familiar with exam formats and can help to boost confidence.
  • Stay organised: Students should keep their notes, resources, and practice papers in order so you can easily find what they need.
  • Look after yourself: Good sleep, healthy food, and regular movement help your brain perform at its best.

Uniform

Students can wear either full summer or winter uniform until 1 June. Navy pants can be worn as part of the winter uniform; however, tracksuit pants are not appropriate and should not be worn unless the student is in full PE uniform as part of our sports/PE program. A reminder that PE uniform should only be worn on days when a student has a practical PE class.

Safety at bus stops

Many of our students travel to and from school by bus. We encourage parents/carers to speak with their children about safety at bus stops.

  • All students should stand back from the road while waiting for a bus
  • Students should not block the footpath
  • Students should be mindful of their surroundings and make way for members of the public who are trying to use the footpath
  • When the bus arrives, students should wait for any passengers to disembark before attempting to board the bus
  • Students should calmly board the bus and should not push or shove others

It has been a vibrant and productive start to Term 2, and I look forward to what the rest of the term holds for our community.
