During our 70th anniversary year we are opening up the Archives to reveal stories and events linking our rich past with the 2025 school year.
Travelling Theatre
In the early 1980s Mentone Girls' High School as it was then known, introduced the Travelling Theatre which was inspired by the energetic drama teacher Maggie Morrison.
The objective was to involve the Year 9 cohort in an activity designed to cement a connection between our school and the local community. Over two hundred students were involved over a period of a week which consisted of preparations and performances.
The girls walked many kilometres bedecked in colourful outfits, led by a white Clydesdale horse named Silver who was lent by the Sandringham Council. His cart was painted in decorative colours by art teacher Michael Stewart.
Six schools were visited and the troupe also entertained the public in the Mentone Shopping Centre and near Black Rock Beach, where coins were dropped into the students’ collection tins to cover expenses and make a small profit.
This event occurred for eight years and there was a pall of sadness within the school when this was discontinued at the end of the decade.
