Year 9
City Cite
In late August our Year 9 cohort visited the city for two weeks on their City Cite experience. This program is a challenging and valuable opportunity for our students, developing their senses of teamwork, leadership, compassion, empathy, and belonging in the year level.
Students visited many key locations and landmarks of Melbourne, from Flinders Street Station to the Melbourne Magistrates Court to Queen Victoria Market. Through this experience and the perspectives shared by guest speakers, students expressed gratitude for the families, homes, and items they have. Students also commonly said they grew in independence, collaboration and teamwork, and time management as they navigated the city in their groups.
Students have forged new friendships, gained a strong sense of gratitude, and learnt valuable life lessons from outside the classroom. A fantastic effort by our Year 9s—well done for all you have achieved in this program.

City Cite allowed me to become much more confident with public transport and navigation in the city. Before this, I had never really explored the city; all the people, traffic and busyness never appealed to me. But City Cite has shown me that the city is much more than this. It is full of culture, life and places to explore.

The thing that had the biggest impact on me was how blessed I am compared to others in the community. Doing a project on homelessness was an eye-opener for me because I didn’t realise how bad homeless people have it. It changed me. It made me more grateful for the small things in life. Like clothing, secure food, a stable roof over my head, a loving family. It also made me more empathetic.

“Visiting the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court had the biggest impact on me. It showed me how common and varied crime in Melbourne can be, including offences that we might not normally hear about. The visit gave me an insight into the legal system. Watching court proceedings helped me understand how cases are handled, how decisions are made, and how laws are applied.”

“After being in the city for two weeks, seeing much more unfortunate people than I expected, I developed a higher sense of gratitude towards my home and my family. Although the cost of living and inflation is making life in Melbourne harder than it once was, I am appreciative of the fact that I can still have the general necessities that I need in life.”
