Year 5 News

From Tessa Patrao, Year 5D teacher
Ready and raring to learn
After a fun and relaxing holiday the grade 5s have come back ready to hit the ground running on a great term of learning. It has been nice to catch up with our peers and teachers and enjoy the beautiful weather during break times. This term we are so excited to be getting into the kitchen and starting our cooking classes. We have house athletics day to look forward to as well as coming back to all our specialist classes.
Reading
This week in reading we have been learning all about note take and discovering strategies to help us decode and read unknown words. We learned all about Morphemes, the smallest part of a word to hold meaning, and we practised adding and subtracting prefixes and suffixes from base words. We have also learned about etymology and discovered where different words are connected and the languages they came from. We put this learning together into a morpheme zine.
Writing
In writing we have been learning how to use our decoding strategies as spelling strategies, with a focus on breaking down words into sounds and syllables and spelling the base word before adding a prefix or suffix. We had fun in the lesson where we got to make up our own words using a definition provided by the teachers and the prefixes and suffixes we know. We also practised writing sentences and paragraphs based on notes we had taken while watching a video of Malala Yousafzai addressing the UN Education Summit.
Maths
In Maths we have been learning about factors and multiples and prime and composite numbers. We explored factor trees to find different prime factors and played a fun game with hundreds charts where in partners we were trying to find factors and multiples of given numbers.
