Year 2 News

From Risa Hammel, Year 2E teacher
Camp is on
We hope everyone had a restful school holidays and are so excited to welcome back our Grade 2s to term two!
This past week, we have enjoyed getting back into the swing of our learning. We spent our wellbeing session going back over our routines and expectations, so that we can all feel safe and supported while at school.
Camp Experience
We want to remind all families that our Grade 2 Camp Experience is coming up in Week 3. We are very excited for these days, and would appreciate if you could have a conversation with your child about these days and ensure you have filled in the permission forms on Compass or the physical copies sent home.
We have some exciting times ahead for Grade 2, and as always, we appreciate all the support you give your children!
Maths
We have spent the last week learning about money and using money in maths problems. This started with a lesson in all the various Australian coins and bills, playing around with their values and seeing how many different ways we could reach a total amount. We then used money to practice repeated addition and skip counting, preparing for our next unit where we will learn multiplication. Our Grade 2s also used money to solve word problems and work within a budget.
Reading
We have done a lot of practice with our reading fluency, focusing on how we read out loud. We used the EARS checklist to see if we were reading with expression, automatic word recognition, rhythm and phrasing, and smoothness. It would be awesome if you could spend some time listening to your child read out loud to you and hear all the hard work they have put in this week! We also played around with punctuation and how it impacts expression and smoothness. For example, practice reading this out loud with your child: blah, blah, blah? Blah! Blah. Blah? Blah, blah, blah! “Blah, blah.” Blah!
Reading and Writing
Across both reading and writing we have begun a shark investigation. Using a wide variety of shark reading resources, we have started to learn a lot about these sea creatures. Our Grade 2s have resisted narrative planning, and used a shark for a main character to plan and draft an interesting story. We have also looked at sentence fragments and practiced turning fragments into complete sentences. How would you turn this fragment into a full sentence: cold, windy day?
