Exploring Language
Our Grade 3 students have made a fantastic start to the term, returning to the classroom with enthusiasm, focus, and a positive mindset for learning. It has been wonderful to see students quickly settle into routines and demonstrate our school values of being Responsible, Inclusive, Sagacious, and Ethical in their daily learning.
In Reading and Writing, students have been developing their note-taking skills across a range of engaging topics, including volcanoes, animals, and other areas of interest. They have been learning how to identify key information, organise their ideas clearly, and add detail to support their thinking. This important skill is helping to build a strong foundation for future information report writing.
As part of our Inquiry learning, we have also begun exploring Australia’s neighbours. Students are using their growing note-taking skills to gather information about different countries in our region, and over the coming weeks they will use these notes to plan and write detailed information reports.
We have also been exploring important language concepts such as homophones, homonyms, prefixes, and suffixes. Students have been building their understanding of how words can sound the same but have different meanings, as well as how adding prefixes and suffixes can change the meaning of words. This work is supporting both their reading comprehension and their writing.
In Mathematics, our focus has been on skip counting both forwards and backwards. Students have been exploring a variety of strategies to help them count efficiently and accurately, such as using patterns, number lines, and ‘add and compensate’ methods. It has been great to see students challenging themselves and building confidence as they explain their thinking and try different approaches.
We are very proud of the strong start our Grade 3s have made and look forward to another exciting term of learning ahead!
