NAIDOC Week – 50 Years of Deadly

To begin the term, we took time to honour and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through a range of NAIDOC Week activities.

On Wednesday, we gathered for a College Assembly featuring traditional dances performed by our Indigenous students alongside Mr Jayden Boundry, a Noongar storyteller and cultural consultant. We were also honoured to welcome Mr Matthew McGuire, an Aboriginal Elder, who delivered a meaningful Welcome to Country.

A group of our Indigenous students also contributed to a collaborative art project celebrating the deep cultural significance of Whadjuk Noongar Boodja and the enduring connection between people, Country and culture. The artwork incorporates symbols and colours representing our College values of Community, Compassion and Excellence, our six year levels, the Noongar Six Seasons, and Djarlgarro Beelier (Canning River).

To conclude our NAIDOC celebrations, our Year 7 students participated in an introductory Noongar language workshop. They learned basic conversational phrases while developing an understanding of pronunciation and sentence structure.

Together, these activities brought our College community together to listen, learn and show respect for the First Nations peoples who have cared for the land on which we learn and gather for countless generations.
