Representing MGC in the Under 14 age group was April Penaia, Anna Chard, Isla Rose and Ruby Watson. While, competing in the Under 15 were students Allie Bolle, Lucy Crouch, and Erin Simoni. The course demonstrated serval challenges, including a head wind, and lengthy hill. Our MGC runners ran incredibly well with April Penaia placing 33rd, Ruby placing 41st Isla Rose placing 77th and Anna Chard placing 80th. As a team the Under 14s placed 4th, which was an incredible result. The Under 15s placed 5th overall with Lucy Crouch placing 49th, Erin Simoni placing 61st and Allie Bolle placing 86th. It was a fantastic day and our Cross Country Team should be extremely proud of their performance.

Senior Football Quarter and Semi Finals

On Wednesday the 9th of August our Senior Football Team headed to Ballarat to compete in the Quarter and Semi State Finals.

Our footballs played Trinity C Colac in the quarterfinals and came out firing. MGC scored the first to goals and utilised this momentum throughout the game.  Our Seniors put pressure around the ball and demonstrated an excellent level of skill, defeating Trinity College 8.7.55 to 0.0.0. We knew the Semi Finals were going to be a tougher match against Western Heights College, who were a Sports Academy School.

The conditions weren’t in our favour, kicking against a head wind, making it difficult to score. Western Heights scored the first goal, leading 14-1 at Quarter Time. Our Seniors continued to look for way to score and break away, but Western Heights weren’t backing down. At Third Quarter time the score was 22 – 2. With a few position changes, placing an extra player in defence and moving our key ruck, Keira Lindemans into the forward line showed some promise. We shut down Western Heights forward line and MGC kicked two goals. Our Seniors nearly pulled off a miracle. Unfortunately, time was not on our side, with a final result of 22-16.

Thank you to Andrew Fero-Kovassy for driving our Senior and to Dan De Gois for coaching our Seniors and supporting our Seniors. Although it wasn’t the result we were hoping for, our Seniors should be incredibly proud on their effort and amazing performance throughout the year.

Year 8 Netball – Regional Finals

On the Monday the 9th of August our Year 8 Students competed at the Netball Regional Finals, which were held at Macleod NETS Stadium.

Our first match we played Macleod. Our Year 8s started off strong, leading the first quarter by 10. The year 8s settled as got into a beautiful rhythm, winning the first game 22-14. The second match was against Kyneton SC. Our year 8s created space, committed to the ball, and put excellent defensive pressure down the court. Our Year 8s demonstrated a high standard of Netball and everyone in the team stepped up, resulting with an impressive win against Kyneton, 44-1. Our final game for our Pool was against Preston. The year 8s went into the game feeling confident but nervous as our final match would determine whether we make it through to the final. Our Year 8s came out firing, continuously backing each other on and off the court. It was a more challenging game, but our Year 8s held their own and came away with the win, 33-19.

MGC played Mernda Central in final, which was going to be challenging game. Our goal was to control the flow and to play our game, that is what is exactly our Year 8s did. From the beginning our Year 8s set the tone of game by putting consistent pressure on and around the ball, resulting with several turnovers and ensured to reward their hard work. Our year 8s demonstrated great communication and trust amongst each other throughout the match. This was highlighted particularly around the ring, both offensively and defensively. Our Year 8s moved the ball incredibly well around the court and our plays were seamless. Each team member played a special role and rose to the challenged with Lexi McCarthy, Mollie Donovan and Finlay Barry moving beautifully and creating strong holds in the goal ring. Summa Smith and Isla Rose provided strong drives to the ball, linking each play. Eve Fumberger, Liliana Perovic and Zara McIntosh worked beautifully in defence, with amazing interceptions and rebounds. Lastly, Charlie Mulholland was very strong throughout the day, demonstrating a high standard of netball as both in Goals and Midcourt. Charlie showed great leadership on and off the court.

Overall, it was an impressive game and a pleasure to watch with our Year 8s coming away with an amazing win, 30-5. A big congratulations to our Year 8s on their wonderful performance, qualifying for the State Finals. A special thanks to Tonia Douglas-Scarlfe and Hazel Muxlow for assisting with our Year 8s on the day. Bring on State!
