Year 9 - I am a Girl

Barbie Movie

Recently in World of Ideas, the students have been exploring contemporary issues from around the globe. Through this inquiry, students have explored how power and gender are represented in our world, so it was a no-brainer to check out the Barbie film as a cohort.

The day was a brilliant mix of popcorn, singing along to the catchy soundtrack, and unpacking modern concepts of femininity. Below are some happy snaps from the day.

After the film, there were significant takeaways for our students, from the cognitive dissonance that women face daily to the varied views of how women are presented across cultures. As a reflection, each class had the opportunity to create subversive Barbies and hold a ‘hot seat’ to unpack and platform the various views of being a ‘real’ woman in 2023. This created a diverse and respectful dialogue where each student gave input on how they view women, from the challenges to the positive experiences. As teachers, we are beyond impressed with the insightful views expressed. We have selected some samples below to share with the community what our fabulous Year 9s have taken from this experience.
