Assistant Principals' Report

Year 7-9 Assistant Principal Report:

Rachel Robertson

I wish to congratulate all students who were involved in the Grease production this year. It was wonderful to see a mixture of students across year levels collaborating together to produce a wonderful production. We saw some very tired faces on Friday but the lifelong memories that have been created have made it so worthwhile!

Year 7 students participated in Murnong Day on the 2nd of August, where they learned about the biodiversity of the local area, planted Murnong plants and learned about the significance of these plants to the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people. It was great to see students getting their hands dirty planting native plants in our community garden.

You could hear the singing and shrieks of laughter throughout the school as Year 8 students celebrated Wellbeing Day on Friday 11th August. Students participated in a range of activities that included keyring making, a silent disco (although this was anything but silent!) and yoga.

Year 9 students all attended the Barbie movie to support the introduction of their new World of Ideas (WOI) unit, I am a girl. It explores relevant ideas around consumerism, body image and beauty. We hope that students found the movie thought-provoking, ideas-inspiring, and if nothing else, fun!

This week is Science week, where different activities are running every day this week. The Year 7 students have participated in Reptile Encounters, while Year 8s questioned their beliefs in the Bad Science incursions. On Wednesday, a panel of female STEM professionals spoke to students about following their dreams in the areas of science, sustainability, and the environment. It was so inspiring to see students from all ages ask questions about pathway options, transfer of skills from high school to the workplace, and of course, how much each professional is paid to do the job they love!

Year 10-12 Assistant Principal Report:

Grease!

I couldn’t write my section without adding my Grease feedback. This was my first introduction to an MGC school production, and my family and I had a ball. My teenage niece – who grumbled at the start about being dragged along, asked to come back the next day! Her highlight being the power-ballad of “Hopelessly Devoted To You.”

All the cast got into their characters and the had great fun with the mannerisms. We’re definitely looking forward to future shows.

Tree Planting Day

I was also lucky enough to come to my first MGC Tree Planting Day. It was great that we were able to hold the ceremony in front of our new boat shed artwork - celebrating the Birrarung Marr, the work our students Daisy, Immy, Eti and Eva did to organise the artwork and Indigenous Artist Simone Thomson.

Throughout the speeches and smoking ceremony, students kept the microphones carbon-neutral by riding our energy-producing bikes. I was lucky enough to have a go – and I definitely felt that!

The turnout was amazing, with students, teachers and community members all pulling together to revegetate the area with native species.

MGC Vs Melbourne High School (MHS)

I’d like to thank all the staff and students that were involved in the MGC vs MHS events. A bit disappointed that we lost the dodgeball – but I did hear from our School Captain Ashna, that she spotted some cheating.

Luckily, we stomped it in the debate!

Excursions! Excursions! Excursions!

French excursions, movie excursions, legal excursions… One of my jobs at the college is to approve excursions – and you’re keeping me employed! Thank you to all the staff that take the time to plan these excursions and make the learning applied for our students.
