Science
Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Australia
During August, students in Year 11 Biology classes gained some real-world practical knowledge on genetic conditions. Sally Barton from Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Australia visited each Year 11 Biology class, giving students an introduction to genetically acquired blood disorders, focusing on thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia. This links in with the work on genetics Year 11 Biology students study during Unit 2.
Students learned about the genetics of the conditions and their pattern of inheritance, current medical research in the field, prevention strategies, patient experiences and importance of blood donations and social impact opportunities.
Science Competitions
Congratulations to the following students for participating in extra-curricular science exams this year. Each exam was a 1-2 hour multiple choice or short answer exam, testing and extending students’ knowledge in that field. Well done to everyone who participated!
International Chemistry Quiz
Senior Division (Year 11)
- Jade Simoni
- Nandini Vyas
Final Division (Year 12)
- Duru Gurcan
The International Chemistry Quiz gives students the opportunity to explore the relevance of chemistry in an exciting and stimulating way. The quiz promotes chemistry and chemical thinking, with questions that go beyond what is covered in the curriculum.
Here’s an example!
Australian Science Olympiad

- Nandini Vyas
Physics
- Nandini Vyas
- Lucy Gao
Earth and Environmental Science
- Chloe McCormick
The Australian Science Olympiads are a staged science enrichment program for Australian high school students
The ultimate goal of the Australian Science Olympiads is to select the team to represent Australia at the International Science Olympiads. Good luck to our MGC students!
