Nelson Mandela Youth Leadership Summit

Sophia Qureshi, Year 12

On Friday the 28th of July, several of Melbourne Girls’ College’s VCE students were sponsored by Richmond Rotary to attend the Centre of Optimism’s Nelson Mandela’s Youth Leadership Summit. Here students were spoken to by notable figures in our Victorian community such as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp, and the leader of the opposition, John Pesutto. Students participated in enriched discussions about resilience, perseverance and leadership within themselves and the community. The floor was then opened to a debate where youth attendees discussed issues they believed to be prevalent among their peers – we were lucky to have one of our Year 12s voice her own perspective on the discussion of the division of government funding between public and private schools. The day concluded with a lunch and performances from the St Paul’s Lutheran Choir.
