National History Challenge

On Saturday 16th September, Manveer K from Callistemon headed to Yarra Valley Grammar for the State Finals of the National History Challenge. The National History Challenge, held each year, is a research-based competition for Australian students, providing an opportunity to research world history, examine Australia’s past, investigate their community or explore their own roots. The competition emphasises and rewards quality research, the use of community resources and effective presentation. Manveer entered her research essay about the Sikh Empire into the competition, and making it to the State Finals is a fantastic achievement. State and National winners will be announced at the National Presentation Ceremony on 27th November. We wish her luck with the rest of the competition.

Film and Identity in the City

During October, Year 7 English (EAL) classes went into the city to explore two venues related to their learning, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and the Immigration Museum.

To consolidate learning about film in Term 3, students visited the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). At ACMI, they explored the history of film and other screen entertainment. They raced between exhibits, with the highlight being the history of computer games (of course).

To prepare for learning about how to express themselves through poetry in Term 4, students explored notions of identity and belonging through the exhibitions at the Immigration Museum. There they noted people, places and things that moved and interested them, so they could use the ideas later in their poetry writing.

The Crucible

Dandenong High School students were treated to another excellent performance from Eagle’s Nest Theatre. This time, they performed sections of the play ‘The Crucible’ alongside dramatic readings from the novel The Dressmaker.

This helped students who went on to the English exams to compare the two texts and notice new details that they could use in their essays during the massive 3 hour English exam!

Hussain S (C12) summed it up well when he thanked the Eagle’s Nest performers on behalf of the Year 12 English students, saying that the presentation was very informative and entertaining.

This was the last year of these texts on the text list, but this won’t be the last we will see of Eagle’s Nest Theatre Company at Dandenong High School!
