7B Terrariums

This year as part of their ecosystems unit, the Banksia Year 7s built terrariums - self sustaining closed ecosystems. The nutrients and gases cycle through the closed jar. Springtails and other tiny organisms live, die and breed inside the terrariums, making up an essential part of the ecosystem. Students found out what worked and what didn’t work by using the scientific method to predict, make a change, and observe results. This photo was taken on November 1st, which means that the jars were closed for six weeks before the photo. The ecosystems of successful jars had reached an equilibrium or a balance.
