Italian Learning Comes to Life

Year 8 Italian - Fresh Pasta-Making Experience

Gallery Image

This term, our Year 8 Italian students stepped into the role of aspiring Italian chefs as they took part in a fun fresh pasta-making lesson.

As part of their Italian studies, students have been learning how to describe themselves and others, and speak about their interests and personal skills in the target language. This activity brought out some impressive culinary skills, which became a standout strength for many of the students.

The pasta-making experience provided a wonderful opportunity to connect language learning with authentic Italian culture, allowing students to develop practical skills while discovering the important role food plays in bringing people together. From kneading dough to cutting pasta, the lesson was filled with enthusiasm, teamwork and plenty of delicious fun.

Experiences like these help students see language beyond the classroom, creating meaningful cultural connections while building confidence in their learning journey.

Che esperienza fantastica… e buon appetito!

Year 9 Italian Excursion - Unit 1: Travel

On Wednesday, 17 June 2026, Year 9 Italian students attended their annual excursion to The Vault Italian Restaurant. The experience provided a fantastic opportunity for students to bring their Semester 1 Unit 1 learning to life through an authentic language and cultural experience.

Students represented the College exceptionally well, demonstrating outstanding respect, manners, skill and maturity throughout the visit.

A highlight of the excursion was the interview conducted in Italian with our guest speaker, Gioia, who recently arrived in Australia on a working holiday and is also seeking to further develop her English as a second language. Students confidently applied the Italian speaking skills they have been developing and practising throughout their Travel-themed unit this semester. It was wonderful to see them engage so positively, ask thoughtful questions and communicate with confidence in an authentic, real-world Italian language setting.

The cultural experience continued with students enjoying a traditional Italian dining experience, beginning with authentic antipasto, followed by a delicious pasta dish as their main course. To conclude the event, students enjoyed authentic Italian gelato, providing the perfect ending to a day centred around language, culture and immersive learning.

The day was a wonderful celebration of the hard work students have put into their Italian studies this semester. They should be proud of the way they embraced the experience with enthusiasm, professionalism and a genuine appreciation for Italian culture.

Bravissimi studenti!

🧀 Campionato Ruzzola – Year 10 Italian Class Event Recap

Ending Term 2 and their Unit 1 studies in Italian, the Year 10 Italian class brought history to life with a fun and educational twist on the ancient Italian tradition of Ruzzola, a game that dates to the Etruscan era. Traditionally, this game involved rolling a wheel of Parmigiano cheese down a path, a practice that’s both culturally rich and, nowadays, quite expensive!

To keep the spirit alive (and the budget intact), students used a wheel substitute to compete in teams. A total of 4 teams participated in this lively event.

Event Highlights:

  • Linked to the Term 2 theme of childhood memories, focusing on traditional games and food.
  • Students learned about the cultural significance of Ruzzola and how it connects to Italian heritage.
  • Two teams emerged victorious, proudly taking home the ‘Campionato Ruzzola’ trophy.
  • All students were rewarded with a nostalgic Italian treat: Kinder Chocolate, a beloved chocolate sweety enjoyed by Italian children for generations

Results:

  • Team AC Milan
    • Kambel Q, Christian R, Tanner K, James C = WINNERS!
  • Team Napoli
    • Chayse R, Bentley S, Orlando H, Archer

Year 10 Italian Inter-School Cultural Exchange

To celebrate the end of Semester 1, our Year 10 Italian students from St Brigid’s College and Mazenod College came together for a fantastic session of language, culture and connection.

Students participated in a lively "Conversazione a rotazione" (speed speaking activity) designed to break the ice, where students practised asking and responding to conversational questions in Italian. The fun continued with a friendly Bocce challenge, encouraging teamwork and plenty of healthy competition, followed by a shared Italian lunch enjoyed by all.

Adding to the authentic cultural atmosphere, students were fortunate to have a World Cup Final playing in the background during lunch, creating an exciting and immersive Italian-inspired environment throughout the session while enjoying their lunch.

It was wonderful to see all students participate with respect, enthusiasm and thoughtful engagement, making the event a memorable way to celebrate their learning and appreciation of Italian language and culture.

Alla prossima!
