From the Principal

Many in the community will be aware that our Principal, Mrs Sabrina Hughes, and Director of Boarding, Mrs Annamaria Cream, are currently on the Oblate Charism Pilgrimage to celebrate 200 years of the Oblate Constitutions and Rules. They are immersed in Catholic and Oblate history and locations in Europe. For that reason, I have taken the opportunity to share my reflections here.

I have been thinking deeply on how we are a loving community who come together with care, concern and celebration.

In 1 John 4:7, it was said, “Let us love one another because love is from God”. In the closing weeks of the term, it has certainly felt we have experienced this in the many Moments of Grace our community activities have provided.

By all accounts, the inaugural MazzFest was a roaring success. It was held at the Milkbar in Inglewood last week and saw our rock musicians hit the stage with an authentic performance to an audience comprising families, staff and others.

The Year 10 students have seen the culmination of their MyPath week bringing families together with our Careers Team to talk about subject selections for 2027 and the pathways that emerge from them. We see our young people at many stages of knowing and not knowing what their next steps might be, which is fine and normal. We counsel according to exactly where your sons are at in their journey.

Throughout the MyPath week and counselling sessions, what has been clear to me is that we come together to do this. We have shared information, discussion, consternation and caring through this process.

We also saw an influx of parents, grandparents, siblings, significant adults and carers filled the Year 7 corridors as we enjoyed Ancient World Museum Day. Many cardboard boxes were sacrificed in the making of the dioramas, ancient weapons and faithful re-creations of other sorts. The work no doubt happened at home as much as in the classrooms, so parents and teachers should both be commended. It was a moment of togetherness where we shared the pride on the faces of your sons and celebrated their learning.

For me, it is these opportunities, particularly when we part company for our well-earned inaugural three-week break, that make the community of Mazenod feel so alive and united in purpose and care for one another.

Thank you for these times, and the many others this term, when we came together. It is life-giving and intrinsic to our community.

God bless and go gently into the holidays.
