Year 9 Civics and Citizenship Incursion

A Powerful Insight Into Justice

On Tuesday, 6 June, Year 9 students had the opportunity to hear from Mr John Button, deepening their understanding of legal processes in Western Australia.

Mr Button was wrongly convicted and imprisoned for the 1963 murder of his partner, Rosemary Anderson. He spoke to students about his trial, his time in prison and the long legal journey that ultimately led to his conviction being overturned in 2002.

In addition to explaining legal procedures, Mr Button provided valuable historical context about Perth and discussed the impact of notorious serial killer Eric Edgar Cooke, whose crimes were later linked to the case.

We greatly appreciated the time Mr Button spent connecting classroom learning to real-life legal experiences, offering students a powerful and memorable insight into the justice system.
