Hello families,

 

Our last week of Term 3 has quickly approached! The children have had a successful term exploring Media Arts and creating lots of exciting new artwork. It has been wonderful to see their creativity, confidence and skills develop throughout the term.

 

Here’s what we did last week:

 

Preps

In Week 9, Prep students practiced overlapping lines and ordering the colours of the rainbow using watercolour and pastel.

 

At home, you can practice:

  • Go on a rainbow colour hunt around your home. Can your child find something red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet?
  • Give your child a piece of paper and ask them to draw 5 different types of lines (e.g. straight, wavy, zigzag, curved and spiral).
  • Ask your child to draw two lines that overlap and explain which line is on top.
  • Sing along to The Colors Song | Art Songs | Scratch Garden.

 

 

 

Grade 1

In Grade 1, students practiced drawing a self-portrait, making sure to include facial features using shapes and lines.

 

At home, you can practice:

  • Sit with your child in front of a mirror and ask them to name their eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth and ears.
  • Ask your child to look carefully at their face and draw a self-portrait. Encourage them to notice the shape and size of their features rather than drawing from memory.
  • Challenge them to use different shapes and lines to create their facial features.
  • Ask: “What makes your face different from someone else's?”

 

 

Grade 2

 Using secondary colours, Grade 2 students created a self-portrait with a background featuring different lines we have learnt throughout the year.

 

At home, you can practice:

  • Ask your child to name the three primary colours: red, yellow and blue.
  • Ask them to name the three secondary colours: orange, green and purple.
  • Try mixing two primary colours with paint or coloured pencils to see which secondary colour you can create.
  • Draw a quick self-portrait and challenge your child to fill the background with at least 5 different types of lines.

 

 

Grade 3

Grade 3 students made a mixed-media collage of a tree using buttons for the foliage. In this task, we explored different textures and materials.

 

At home, you can practice:

  • Go on a texture hunt around your home. Find something smooth, rough, bumpy, soft and hard.
  • Ask your child to describe each texture using art vocabulary.
  • Collect a few safe, unwanted materials such as paper, cardboard, fabric, wool or buttons and create a small mixed-media artwork.
  • Challenge your child to use at least 3 different materials and explain how each material adds texture to their artwork.

 

 

Grade 4

Grade 4 students finished a two-week project creating a watercolour painting of a cactus desert landscape. We learnt to paint gradient backgrounds using analogous colours and used shading, smudging and blending techniques to draw the landscape.

 

At home, you can practice:

  • Find a colour wheel online and ask your child to identify a group of analogous colours.
  • Use coloured pencils or crayons to create a gradient by pressing lightly at one end and gradually pressing harder.
  • Practice hatching, cross-hatching and stippling on a piece of paper. Try using each technique to shade a simple circle so it looks three-dimensional.
  • Draw a simple object, such as an apple or ball, and use light and dark shading to make it look 3D.

 

 

 

Grade 5

Grade 5 students finished a two-week project where they collaged textured paper to create a tree or flower. Students chose a colour scheme and cut and arranged petals of different sizes to create an interesting composition.

 

At home, you can practice:

  • Look around your home and identify different colour schemes in rooms, clothing or objects.
  • Collect scraps of wrapping paper, newspaper, magazines or coloured paper and compare their different textures and patterns.
  • Create a small collage using at least 3 different types of paper.
  • Experiment with cutting, layering and overlapping shapes to create a flower, tree or abstract artwork.
  • Ask your child to explain why they chose their particular colours and how they arranged their shapes.

 

 

 

Grade 6

The Grade 6 students finished their cardboard self-portraits and started their galaxy wall project. We used chalk pastels and smudging techniques to create a galaxy effect. Students chose celestial bodies or astronomical objects to add to their backgrounds. In Week 10, we will be adding a wall feature to complete the project.

 

At home, you can practice:

  • On black or dark-coloured paper, use chalk pastels or coloured pencils to create a small galaxy.
  • Blend 2–4 different colours together using your finger or a tissue to create a soft, cloudy effect.

A final note

Thank you for your continued support throughout Term 3. We are very proud of the students’ creativity and progress this term and look forward to seeing what they create in Term 4!
