Grade 6 Community News
Dear Year 6 families,
As we come to the end of Term 3, our Grade 6 students have continued to show wonderful enthusiasm, resilience and commitment to their learning. It has been fantastic to see students challenge themselves, work collaboratively and take increasing ownership of their learning. We are incredibly proud of the maturity and leadership they continue to demonstrate as they approach the final term of their primary school journey.
English
To wrap up Term 3, students have begun exploring our new class novel, Once by Morris Gleitzman. Set during World War II, the novel has provided rich opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions, explore the historical context, and develop a deeper understanding of the characters and events within the story.
Over the past two weeks, students have focused on Felix’s experiences and perspective, making inferences and supporting their thinking with evidence from the text. We have also focused on expanding students’ vocabulary by identifying and analysing unfamiliar words encountered while reading. Some of the words we have explored include admire, navigation, peered, rumble, viciously and singe. Students have used context clues and class discussion to determine the meaning of these words and consider how they are used within the novel.
In addition to our work on Once, students have continued with their regular Spelling Mastery routines, strengthening their spelling skills and expanding their vocabulary through consistent practice and application across English activities.
It has been wonderful to see students engaging thoughtfully with Once as we bring Term 3 to a close. We look forward to continuing Felix’s journey and building on our learning in Term 4.
Maths
To conclude their Term 3 learning, our Grade 6 students have been busy applying their knowledge of Cartesian Planes. They created algorithms to transform shapes and explored how these transformations can be used to create tessellations, before demonstrating their understanding in their final assessment.
Students then took the opportunity to consolidate their learning from across the term, revisiting key concepts in fractions, decimals and measurement. It has been wonderful to see students reflect on their learning, strengthen their understanding and build confidence in their mathematical skills.

Humanities
This term, students explored the fascinating continent of Antarctica, investigating its unique environment, extreme conditions and importance to the world. They learned about significant Antarctic explorers and the challenges they faced during their expeditions.
To apply their learning, students worked collaboratively in groups to design and construct structures suitable for Antarctica. Each group was given different design parameters and had to carefully consider the materials, construction techniques, and environmental conditions that would impact their structure. This hands-on project encouraged students to think creatively, problem-solve and work effectively as a team while applying their knowledge of Antarctica.
Scrapbooking
Our Grade 6 students are continuing to make fantastic progress with their scrapbooks! They have completed their ‘Someone I Admire’ pages and are now finalising their Australian Animal Connection pages. Next term, we will begin working on our Silhouette page. Please continue sending in photos to help make each scrapbook unique and personal to your child!
Respectful relationships
To finish Term 3 learning, students continued to explore gender norms and stereotypes and how these can influence the attitudes, behaviours and expectations of people as they grow. In Term 4, students will explore gender-based violence and the impact of negative gender norms on relationships. They will develop strategies for building positive, respectful relationships, learn about affirmative consent, and explore behaviours that recognise and respect the rights of others. Students will also develop proactive peer-support and help-seeking strategies to respond safely and appropriately to instances of gender-based violence.
Term 4 Reminders:
- Term 4 begins Monday 5th October
- No hat, no play
- Please ensure your child is coming to school with water only in their bottle
- We recommend limiting sugary foods in the morning, as we have noticed they can sometimes lead to a burst of energy followed by a drop in focus.
- The Grade 6 graduation event and Adventure Park excursion are live on Compass. Please ensure you have consent and payment for both on Compass.
