Grade 3 Community News
Dear Grade 3 Families,
What an amazing couple of weeks learning we have had! Thank you as always for your amazing support and partnerships to support your children’s learning.
The children have worked incredibly hard on our TT Rockstars competitions – with some amazing results and improvements across the grade – thank you for supporting and encouraging your children to access this.
English:
The children have begun studying our new class novel, The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. They have found the text engaging and exciting so far and have been exploring how robots are influencing the world around us and what this could look like in the future. We will continue to build on this knowledge as the students work towards creating their own persuasive pieces of writing.
Sentence-Level Writing
Students are continuing to learn about subordinating conjunctions, exploring how these words can be used to join ideas together to create complex sentences. We have been using a Read–Write–Discuss–Revise approach to begin creating our own genre writing and will continue to build on this each week. Students are also focusing on editing and revising their work to enhance their writing independently and through peer support.
Text-Level Writing
Students have begun constructing a persuasive letter titled Robot for the Home, in which they are attempting to convince you, their parents, to have a robot at home! They are learning how persuasive writing works and identifying the features they need to use to effectively persuade their audience. Students are then applying everything they have learnt at sentence level to independently develop their persuasive letters.
Mathematics:
This fortnight, students have continued developing their subtraction skills, including working with numbers that have multiple internal zeroes. They have also been introduced to long division and have started learning the steps involved in solving division problems. In measurement, students have been learning about capacity and exploring how we measure and compare different amounts.
Looking ahead to next week, students will continue developing their understanding of long division. They will also explore money by counting coins and develop their understanding of improper fractions by locating them on a number line. In measurement, students will develop their understanding of position by describing paths and the location of places using the directions north, east, south and west.
Humanities:
This fortnight, students have been learning about some of the first great journeys in human history. They explored why early humans moved to new places and what these migrations looked like. Students also learned about the significance of the Lake Mungo discovery in Australia. They then explored ancient sea travellers and how early voyagers travelled across oceans, using natural features such as the stars, birds and ocean waves to help them navigate and connect with new places.
Last week, students were preparing for our Open Day by researching one of Australia's neighbouring countries: Indonesia, Papua New Guinea or New Zealand. They have been exploring the country's climate zones, native plants and animals, and natural features. Students have also been selecting pictures and diagrams to support their research and adding captions to explain what they have found.
Looking ahead to next week, students will draft and publish their work for Open Day. They will bring together their research, including climate zones, native flora and fauna, natural features, maps, pictures and captions, to create a finished piece that they can proudly share with family and friends.

- Students should be reading out loud for at least 10 min a day
- As we move through winter into spring, please send students prepared with appropriate jumpers, cardigans and coats.
