Grade 4 Community News
Dear Grade 4 Families,
As we come to the end of another busy and rewarding term, we would like to thank you for your continued support throughout Term 3. Students have worked hard across all areas of their learning and have continued to develop their confidence, independence and willingness to take on new challenges. We are proud of the effort and enthusiasm they have shown throughout the term.
English
This term, students have been exploring The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. Through the novel, students have continued to strengthen their comprehension, vocabulary, and sentence-level writing skills.
A key focus has been on expanding simple kernel sentences by adding information about who, what, when, where, and why. Students have also worked with independent and dependent clauses, learning how to rearrange and expand sentences while still making sense in the context of the novel.
Students have developed their vocabulary through words such as pamper, trudging, tranquil, gratitude, adjustment and descended. They have practiced defining new words, identifying words with similar meanings and applying vocabulary correctly in their own sentences.
Students have also practised organising their ideas using a single paragraph outline, identifying a topic sentence, relevant supporting details and a concluding sentence before developing these ideas into a complete paragraph.
Alongside The Wild Robot, students have read a range of informative texts about robots, robotics and artificial intelligence. These texts have explored how robots are used in homes, workplaces, hospitals and other settings, as well as the advantages, challenges and possible future impact of robotics and AI.
Maths
In Mathematics, students have continued to strengthen their number knowledge and mathematical fluency through our Daily Review and Quick Teach lessons.
A significant focus has been on fractions. Students have practiced reading and representing fractions, counting in fractional parts, recognising fractions on number lines and understanding the relationship between improper fractions and mixed numbers.
Students have also developed their understanding of division, including how division problems are represented and read, as well as identifying the divisor. Multiplication facts have been used to support students in solving related division facts, with regular fluency practice helping to build faster and more accurate recall.
Throughout the term, students have continued to revisit and consolidate important concepts including number patterns, number lines, odd and even numbers, inequalities, money and word problems.
Students have also applied their mathematical understanding to measurement, including mass, length and area. Regular whiteboard practice has provided students with many opportunities to respond quickly, check their understanding and build confidence when solving a range of mathematical problems.
Looking Ahead
We are looking forward to continuing to build on the learning and progress students have made throughout Term 3. We encourage students to enjoy a well-deserved break, spend time with family and friends, and return refreshed and ready for their final term of Grade 4.
Reminders
- Please ensure students bring a clearly labeled water bottle to school each day.
- iPads should be fully charged and ready for learning each morning.
- Please ensure all uniform items are clearly labeled.
- Regular reading and practicing multiplication and division facts at home will continue to support students’ learning.
