It has been a busy and engaging period across the Technologies domain, with students continuing to build their skills through hands-on, real-world learning experiences.

Digital Technologies

Our Year 7 students have been taking on a creative and engaging challenge, programming Edison robots to detect movement in a “haunted house” scenario. Acting as digital ghostbusters, students are developing their coding and problem-solving skills in a fun and interactive way.

Meanwhile, our Year 10 Digital Technology students are exploring the world of cybersecurity, examining its importance and real-world applications. Students are developing an understanding of how digital systems are protected and the role cybersecurity plays in everyday life.

Design Technologies

Year 8 and 9 students have been working on activist campaign stickers, developing designs that respond to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Students have explored key global issues, identified target audiences, and created impactful visual messages, which they have brought to life through digital design and sticker production.

Food Technology

Year 10 students have successfully completed their Food Truck practical assessments, showcasing their ability to plan, prepare and present food in a real-world context.

In Year 9, students have been exploring Fairtrade and ethical food production. As part of this learning, they have been preparing a sweet potato chocolate cake, connecting ingredients and production processes to global sustainability concepts.

Year 8 students continue to build their foundational skills, working through their burger design task and developing practical cooking techniques through dishes such as spaghetti bolognese.

VEX Robotics Professional Learning

MSC staff recently attended a VEX Robotics professional learning day at Yarra Ranges Tech School as we continue building our robotics program and exploring opportunities for future inter-school competitions. The session provided valuable hands-on experience with robot design, coding and competition challenges, with plenty of exciting ideas already making their way back into the classroom.

As part of this next step, Mickleham Secondary College will be launching an after-school VEX Robotics Club in Term 3, giving students the opportunity to develop competition-ready teams, build advanced robotics skills and work collaboratively to prepare for future events and challenges. Expressions of interest for the club will open later this term.

VEX Robotics Incursion

On Wednesday 20th of May, the Year 9 VEX Robotics students participated in a full day V5 Robotics incursion. Students were given the opportunity to work with V5 resources, expand their coding experience and test the robots on the VEX court. Our students did an incredible job working their way through different coding challenges throughout the day.

Put Your Hands Up Radio Club

Our student-led “Put Your Hands Up Radio” after-school club has had a fantastic start to the term. Students have been working together to plan and produce new radio segments, develop ideas for school broadcasts and build their confidence in audio production and presenting.

The club has already generated plenty of creative energy, with students taking ownership of content creation and programming. A special edition podcast is also currently in development, giving students another exciting platform to share their ideas and voices with the school community.

Put Your Hands Up Radio Club runs every Tuesday from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. Students interested in joining can see David in Technologies for more information.
