HUMANITIES 

Students have continued to engage in a wide range of Humanities subjects this term, developing their knowledge, skills and ability to think critically about the world around them. Across Geography, History, Business & Economics and Legal Studies, it has been fantastic to see students building confidence in analysing real-world issues, applying key concepts and preparing for upcoming assessments.

 

Year 7

Year 7 students have been exploring Water in the World’, investigating the many ways water is used, valued and managed across different environments. A key focus has been understanding water as a resource, as well as the hazards associated with it, such as floods and droughts. Students are currently working on their Newspaper CAT, where they apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios.

 

Students will soon move into their next unit on Place and Liveability, where they will explore why people move to different locations and what makes a place liveable. As part of this unit, students will apply their understanding by designing their own liveable cities, considering factors such as access to services, environment and quality of life.

 

Year 8 

Year 8 students have been studying Medieval Japan, focusing on the role of the samurai, the code of Bushido, and the structure of Japanese society during this period. They have explored how social hierarchy and cultural values shaped everyday life.

 

Students will next investigate Viking and Polynesian cultures, examining how different societies adapted to their environments, travelled across vast distances and developed unique cultural traditions. This unit supports students in comparing societies and understanding how geography influences ways of life.

 

Year 9 

Year 9 students have been exploring how the world is increasingly connected as a global community. They have examined how digital tools influence communication, trade and everyday life, as well as the differences between developed and developing nations. Students have analysed how access to technology impacts education, job opportunities and quality of life, building their understanding of global inequality and interdependence.

 

Students are now transitioning into Business & Economics, where they are learning how to make informed financial decisions. This includes exploring investments, savings, insurance and financial risk, helping students develop practical skills for managing money in the future.

 

 

Year 10 – Senior Humanities

Year 10 students continue to develop advanced Humanities skills as they engage with a range of senior subjects. Across their studies, there is a strong focus on analysing evidence, evaluating real-world issues and constructing structured, evidence-based responses in preparation for SACs and exams.

 

History

In History, students have completed AOS2 – Social and Political Movements, where they investigated movements such as civil rights, women’s rights and Indigenous rights. They examined the causes of these movements, the methods used to create change and their overall impact on society, while developing their ability to analyse perspectives and evaluate significance. Students are now studying AOS3 – The Globalising World, with a focus on the Cold War and Vietnam War, where they explore key events, competing ideologies and the long-term global consequences of conflict.

 

Business & Economics

In Business & Economics, students have completed AOS2 – Economic Literacy, where they built an understanding of key economic indicators such as inflation, unemployment and Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and examined the role of government and the Reserve Bank of Australia in managing the economy. They are now undertaking AOS3 – Work, where they are exploring employment, productivity and workplace practices, developing an understanding of how businesses operate and respond to changing economic conditions.

 

Legal Studies & Politics

In Legal Studies, students have completed AOS2 – National Politics, where they explored how Australia’s political system operates, including the role of political parties, the structure of parliament and the electoral process. They developed their ability to analyse political issues and evaluate differing viewpoints, strengthening their understanding of how citizens participate in Australia’s democracy.

 

Geography

In Geography, students have completed AOS2 – Geographies of Human Wellbeing, where they explored differences in quality of life across the world and the factors that influence wellbeing. They are now studying AOS3 – Improving Human Wellbeing, where they are examining strategies to address inequality and improve living standards at a local, national and global scale.
