GO Foundation Culture Connect Day
Our GO Scholars had an inspiring day at the GO Culture Connect Day in Week 6, coming together for a day of culture, connection, teamwork and motivation.
A highlight of the day was a Q&A with former Sydney Swans player and GO Founder, Michael O’Loughlin. Michael shared a powerful message with students about the importance of simply showing up and being willing to take a chance on yourself.
He reflected on his own journey as a 17-year-old from Adelaide, when he stepped onto a plane bound for Sydney to pursue an opportunity to train with the Sydney Swans. It would have been easy to let uncertainty or self-doubt take over. What if it didn't work out? What if he wasn't good enough?
Instead, Michael showed up.
He worked hard, embraced every opportunity to learn and grow, challenged himself and kept moving forward. That decision ultimately led to an incredible AFL career and a journey that continues today through the GO Foundation.
Michael's story was a wonderful reminder for our scholars that we don't always know where an opportunity might lead. Sometimes, the first step is simply having the courage to show up, give something a go and see what happens.
And perhaps the most inspiring part? By taking that first step all those years ago, Michael has gone on to create opportunities for young people through the GO Foundation - helping the next generation discover just how far showing up can take them.
Celebrating Connection Through Art
We were proud to recently unveil our new Welcome Mural, a beautiful collaborative artwork created by our students during NAIDOC Week.
The mural is more than a colourful addition to our surroundings. It represents connection, belonging and the importance of culture, creating a meaningful welcome for everyone who enters our community.
Students played an important role in bringing the artwork to life, working alongside Dharawal artist Michael Fardon to explore ideas and stories that could be represented through the mural.
This artwork tells the story of the Nepean River and the water Country that surrounds us.
For thousands of years, the river has welcomed people, animals, ceremony and life, creating connections between Country, culture and community.
Inspired by these connections, the artwork represents our hope that everyone who enters this place feels welcome and connected.
Just as the river brings life and brings people together, we hope this mural welcomes our students, staff, families and visitors. It reminds us to respect Country, learn from one another and care for the land we all share.
The unveiling was a special opportunity to celebrate the students' creativity and contribution, while also coming together with families, community members and special guests including Uncle Eddie Burge, Aunty Lynn Brown, Jaleesa Levaci from the GO Foundation as well as the artsit himself, Michael Fardon. A smoking ceremony and afternoon tea helped make the occasion a meaningful celebration of culture, connection and community.
We look forward to seeing our Welcome Mural continue to greet our community for many years to come.
