Literacy and numeracy are vital tools that empower students well beyond the classroom, underpinning learning across all subjects and preparing them for a wide range of life situations. At Camden High School, we’re committed to strengthening these core skills and helping students see their value in every area of study.  

This term, our Year 8 Literacy and Numeracy lessons have been designed to support writing in Visual Arts, with students developing their ability to structure responses, locate information in artist case studies and interpret meaning from both texts and artworks. 

We are super proud of these Year 8 students, who absolutely nailed their PEEL paragraphs during a recent skill tester activity - showcasing both their dedication and creativity in making the most of every learning opportunity. 

How can colour affect the meaning of an artwork?  

Carla – One thing colour can do is affect the meaning of an artwork. This is important because colours have meanings and can change the way you feel. This can be seen in paintings, with blue representing sadness or yellow showing happiness. This shows that using the right colours in art is important and can affect the meaning of an artwork.   

Saxon - The way colour can affect the meaning of an artwork is by making people feel things. This is important because you need to feel something when you look at an artwork. This can be seen by different shades of various colours changing your mood. This shows that using different colours creates meaning by making people feel something.   

Daniel - Colour can affect the meaning of an artwork by making the viewer feel different emotions depending on the colour. One thing colour can do is change the mood of a viewer by looking at the colours of the artwork. For example, some people associate the colour blue with sadness and deep melancholy. This shows different colouring can create different feelings in different people which can affect the meaning of an artwork.  

Mari - Colour can strongly affect the meaning of an artwork in every piece of art, no matter the medium. The colour is important because it creates emotions, thoughts and conversation. This can be seen in 'The Starry Night' with dark blues creating a calm environment showing a cold night. This shows that colour in an artwork can affect it’s meaning.
