Science Sparks!

Science Week ends with a great success! 

To end off science week 30 Year 9 students attended the Sydney Science Trail. The day started at the Sydney Royal botanic gardens where the students conducted a hands on Seed Banking experiment. 

Students then attended a talk with guest speakers who spoke about extinctions, diversity, population, data collection, surveying, samples collection and techniques, statistics and crime scenes. 

Students were then off to the Australian museum where they attended a science expo and met with universities, government and private educational groups, and stem companies. 

Students ended the day with a forensic workshop where they had to try and solve 6 cases. 

Excursion to the Museum of Human Disease

Our Year 12 Biology students recently had an immersive learning experience at the Museum of Human Disease at UNSW. They engaged in hands-on activities exploring critical topics such as Genetics, Infectious and Non-infectious diseases. This excursion provided a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding beyond the classroom and connect theoretical concepts to real-world applications. 

 As a special bonus, the class had the spontaneous privilege of meeting and supporting Aunty Maxine Ryan. Aunty Maxine is spearheading the creation of a mural to be showcased at the La Perouse Museum next year. The mural will depict the importance and sensitivity of the unique ecological relationships within the region. Camden High School is proud to be represented among the hundreds of contributors involved in this meaningful community art project, highlighting our commitment both to science and Indigenous cultural partnerships. 

Science Week Kicked off with Cawdor Public School’s “Seeds of Science” Secret Agents 

To celebrate the start of Science Week, Cawdor Public School hosted an exciting "Seeds of Science" hunt on Monday. Students from Years 7G and 8G volunteered enthusiastically to buddy up with visiting teams, working together to unravel science-based codes and locate hidden clues around the school grounds. This interactive activity sparked curiosity, teamwork, and a love of scientific discovery across both schools. We eagerly look forward to welcoming our young science secret agents again for future collaborative events. 

Last term, Camden High School’s Science Faculty had the joy of visiting Cawdor Public School to deliver a hands-on, practical science lesson focused on the Solar System and space travel. This collaborative effort allowed younger students to explore the wonders of the universe through engaging experiments and activities designed to nurture their natural curiosity about space and STEM careers. 

Year 11 Biology Camp at Wooglemai Environmental Education Centre 

Our Year 11 Biology students returned refreshed and inspired from their camp at Wooglemai Environmental Education Centre. During the camp, students participated in hands-on fieldwork investigating local ecosystems. They collected, analysed, and interpreted data, gaining practical scientific skills vital for their Biology studies. The immersive outdoor learning environment enabled students to connect classroom theory with the living world, further enhancing their appreciation for ecology and environmental science. 

Teachers Mrs Bromley and Miss Loader expressed great pride in the students’ enthusiasm, collaboration, and achievements throughout the camp. It was a truly enriching experience that brought biology to life in a memorable and impactful way. 

 Current Assessment Highlights 

• Year 8: Students are currently completing an assessment task focused on resources and soil erosion. This task challenges them to understand the impact of natural resource use and human activities on soil health and sustainability. It emphasises critical thinking about environmental challenges and solutions. 

• Year 9: Our Year 9 students are engaged in assessments relating to material science. This area explores properties of materials and their practical applications, encouraging analytical skills and an understanding of how science impacts modern technology and industry. 

• Year 10: The Year 10 cohort is busy preparing for their yearly exams. Their study includes review and consolidation of key scientific concepts learned throughout the year, with a focus on applying knowledge across various scientific disciplines. 

We are proud of the dedication, curiosity, and collaboration demonstrated by our students at all levels. These enrichment activities and assessment tasks continue to build strong foundations for lifelong learning in science.
